Is there a "Round Sounds" for inline engines?
« on: October 01, 2007, 12:15:34 PM »
Having just been to an airshow (for the first time....Whoa!), and getting to hear the sweet pounding of Merlins, got me interested in high quality recordings of those sounds.

I've heard of the "Round Sounds" series for a variety of radial engines, and I tracked down a 2 disc set of internal and external sounds for the Corsair. But I can't find anything comparable for inline engines like the Merlin, the Allison, etc.

And then I realized everything I found considered only US products. I did come across an archival recording set in the library's collection following a Lancaster mission, but while its very cool, the sounds are definitely low res.
Are there modern products across the Atlantic that do for you folks what the "Round Sounds" do for us?

I know the creator of Round Sounds and there is a number of inline engine
recordings. One cd is called "Gustave BF109g " . It has recordings of Spits, Hurricanes and the only flying BF109G-6 in the world. It was recorded at the Duxford air show in England. The Bf109 engine noise is really cool, you can hear the super charger whine and the engine sound is very much different that the Merlin's.

There is also a symposium discussion about the 109 . The topic I found most interesting is that even with the equipment available today that the crankshaft  tolerances of the 109's engine is difficult if not impossible to achieve with today's technology. There are other cd's that have the planes that race at the Reno air races, about 1/2 are super twiked merlins and Pratts. I would check the web. If you cant find them let me know and I will hook you up with someone who sells the line of cd,s. There is also one on the only Japanese powered Zero in existance. I attend an air show every year in CA where that Zero is based, Chino. They hild the best WW2 flying show in the world. I saw 5 P-47's ther one year, it was something to see.
