External HD no longer seen and doesn't cue up
« on: September 30, 2007, 09:54:11 PM »
I've got a MAXTOR 200 Gig that I keep photos and other stuff on. It was normally powered down except for when I was grabbing things from it, so it wasn't on anywhere near full time.

It had 3 logical drives setup on it. Today, I powered it on and while expecting to see the normal stuff - I don't see jack.

So I mounted it inside the box, hooked it up to a IDE cable and even the BIOS wouldn't see it while it was a Master or a Slave.

So, question is now - what are my options?

If you have another HD you can try this:

Set the IDE channel to PIO (slower Mode)
then boot to a ghost disk a ghost the old drive to a new one.

The PIO mode will slow the drive down big time (No DMA.) So depending on how much info you have on there it may take all night.

If it still doesn't show up, there is always the 30 mins in the freeze trick. And yes, I have tried it.

If you need ghost PM me and I'll hook you up with FTP access to my server where I have a few coppies.

So, the BIOS could see the drive - but nothing else could. Norton Ghost recovery, Hiren, etc. So, waiting on a replacement PCB for the HD to come down from Seattle. Will advise.

Wolf, you are going to replace the PCB on the HD?

I did not know one could do that as an option.

Call the support number you got with the drive.  Failing that contact Seagate at http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/

Usually so long as its a PCB from a drive of the exact same vintage, firmware, etc. It's a cheap solution - see if it works. If not - other options remain. At this point its just a matter of getting the data offloaded onto another disc and mirrored.

Replaced the PCB on the Hard Drive. Fired it up. Looks like it is a corrupted partition as well. Got SoftAmbulance Partition Doctor 1.55 to go through it and look for files. Its recovering everything as we speak.

And the best news: The Porn collection is intact!

I need a drink.
