Sad to say, but there are a lot of folks on VOX with bad audio, and sadder yet, when they ask for a report they get "5 by 5".

PLEASE:  BE HONEST when someone asks for a VOX check....

If their audio is scratchy, garbled, too low....TELL THEM.

It's usually easily fixed in Windows properties or in-game VOX properities.

You can always check your OWN audio by placing your in-game ID in the #5 VOX radio box and talk to hear your own audio.

I can't understand about 30% of the folks online because their VOX is usually too low.  Another 5% because their VOX is either set too high and is clipping (over modulating) or because of a bad mic/headset.

Either way....communications among players is one of our biggest assets online...if players cannot understand you, you are at a disadvantage.

Just trying to help......

The proper response is "Dude, you sound like crap"

I can't remember who, but some guy had some wicked vox issues. On range, it was the most overmodulated, screeching, painful thing I have heard, except for some squeakers. After some guys started helping him out, having him check acceleration, drivers, settings in windows, settings in game, etc, someone asked "Where's your mic sitting?"

"On top of my speaker, why?"

doh.

Usually when someone gets on vox all screetchy and squeaky, the normal replies are "My ears are bleeding", "squeeeeek", "What the heck was that", etc...

Some guys have terrible vox and short of phoning them to sort it out it seems these guys don't understand what you try and say in game.  They may not be good with PC's.  I know I ain't but what I've picked up is through trial and error.

So VOX settings......here goes.  You can keep this open and follow these instruction.  I use XP and the sound is Realtek AC97 Audio.  Very common and these instruction are fairly universal from what I've been told.  They may help but if not you can always set them to as they were....just be sure to remember or note your changes.

Right click desk top volume Icon...the bell thingy.

click "open volume control".
now you see a panel.  Firstly move all sliders up to max. Secondly tick "Mute" in Microphone.  It doesn't mute and I have no idea why it says that.  Thirdly if anything else is ticked untick them. Fourthly click "advanced" which pops up a little box TICK "Mic Boost" then close it.

Nearly done but there's more.

Now click "Options"

Click "properties".... now you have another pop up box which usually has opened in PLAYBACK mode.  It has a sub heading "Show the following volume controls".  I have everything ticked EXCEPT 3 things....

"Line in".....the biggest vox problem ever where I was concerned.  It's my experience that if this is ticked vox will be awful.

"phone line"....I don't use my PC to make calls or fax.
"PC Speaker....I use a head set.

OK 3/4 of it's done now move the dot from playback to record.  I have just 2 items that are not ticked.

"Line in".... The bloody vox screwer upper.
"phone Line"... I don't use my pc to make calls or fax.

OK that's it...just "OK" everything back to deck top making sure all sliders are at max and only "MUTE" microphone is ticked.

When you go in game go options / preference / voice.  Check "wave in" and move mic slider to max...the right..

'nother tip ... type your own name in the vbox and then you can find out how you sound without bugging the entire area.

I wonder how many player even know that each number could be anything between 1 and 5...

Quote
"5 by 5:
Respective rating used to report ballpark signal strength and clarity of a transmission.
So a 5 by 1 means a strong signal is present, but what is saying cannot be understood.
1 by 5 means you can understand them, but a signal is barely coming in.
5 by 5 is ideal for both counts."

So... "5/5" equals "Loud and Clear"

Five by five
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In voice procedure (the techniques used to facilitate spoken communication over two-way radios) a station may request a report on the quality and strength of signal they are broadcasting. In the military of the NATO countries, and other organizations, the signal quality is reported on two scales; the first is for signal strength, and the second for signal clarity. Both these scales range from one to five, where one is the worst and five is the best. The listening station reports these numbers separated with the word "by". Five by five therefore means a signal that has excellent strength and perfect clarity — the most understandable signal possible.

Five by five by extension has come to mean "I understand you perfectly" in situations other than radio communication, the way Loud and Clear entered slang, post-WW2.
