Hive Mind - Need help with Mic isssue

Ok got me a new machine - cannot get the mic to work in game.
Running XP

Go into accessories go to front mic - check box, can hear my heavy breathing on speakers so know the mic works but cannot get any joy in AH, any deep thoughts ?
