Night fishing with the kids
« on: October 06, 2007, 06:56:57 PM »
I've been putting in some long hours at work and today I had to spend most of the day in the office.

After dinner tonight the kids all came to me and said they wanted to go fishing.  The oldest hatched the idea because his friend told him the best fishing is after dark.

We get down to the dock as the light is fading...I cast the rod for my oldest son and he totally manages to foul he line after two or three casts himself...before I can even get bait on my larger rod.

So, we are down to one rod.

The kids start chumming...just throwing in old bread crusts.  Soon there are large splashes all around the dock.  But no bites for me.

I figure that I'd try to use a surface lure because the bigger fish were coming to the top and it took a while to switch the lure and sinker to the buoy style one I have.

Eventually I was ready but it was getting later and I was tired so I told them we'd just try a few casts.  My oldest whined that he wanted to try again so I cast it out and told him just to let it sit there.  I turned around to get something and suddenly he skrieks "DADDY!".

He keeps saying there is a big fish on the line and that it really pulled him, but there was no movement in his rod at all.  I asked if it was still hooked and he said yes.  So, I took the rod and gave it a quick yank.  Holy smokers.  The fish went into get me outta here mode but I had him.

Threw him into a cooler I brought...and we all drove home.

Kids were just going bananas!  I walked in and proclaimed "Man hunt food for woman!"

Wife is stoked because she has always bugged me to catch some fresh fish for her.

Here it is...nice little Chubb.  My mother-in-law had already started gutting and scaling it by the time I got the camera out.  Not bad for "off the dock" fishing at the bottom of the hill:

Was this their first fish or first time fishing?  That's pretty cool taking the kids fishing Curval.  How did you prepare the Chubb for dinner?  That dock sounds like a good place to go fishing.  Notice you were using lures.  Do they go for cut bait, shrimp or live minnows or alewives (el-whys) as we call em around these parts?

My last tool when I last went fishing :D

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

hehe Swoop...

Well, it isn't the biggest fish but that is a very large sink it is sitting in so it makes it look smaller than it is....honestly.

(Serenity now!  Serenity now!)  ;)

Heck I was just jazzed to catch something.  Rabbit...I caught this off the ferry dock, basically right where you stayed.  I should have lent you my rod and we could have eaten fresh fish every night while you were here.

At one point there was an almighty splash which sounded like a human being jumping in the water but there was no-one around swimming so there must be some pretty big fish down there.

Its great you caught something.  Even better that you had the experience with the kids.  Kids grow up fast so make the best of what you can.  Time slips away.

Try some sort of flashy lure or even bait but let it sink down since the bigger fish often hang out lower down.  There is plenty of kid fun on that dock and its a close trip from your house.  The little ones are more than happy to catch lots of little things instead of whoppers.  I'm pretty bummed that I was trying to get you out Marlin and Tuna fishing.  I should have hooked up the kids instead.  That sounds like a win for the kids, win for the wife since she's happy for the fresh stuff and of course a win for you since they all win...>

Well I've been taking the kids fishing almost every weekend with the small rod I bought Trew..umm...right after you left.  Timing was not on purpose.  :)

We've done the catching of the small stuff, over and over again.  Now they, and the wife, are only interested in bigger "game".  That's why I bought a second rod.

Marlin (sorry Maaaaalin  [/Boston accent] ;) ) and Tuna are generally caught out of sight of land, and as mentioned as soon as that happens I hurl.  I can go out in a boat over the reefs and stuff but I don't think we need to bother.  From that dock I can catch Chubb, Bonita, Rockfish and Grouper according to other fishing "folk" who frequent the dock.

It's funny because down there they have a sign saying "No fishing from the dock" but then they have set up a repository for tangled fishing line etc that people want to throw away.  It specifically states that is what it is for...lol.

Mama-san finnished gutting and scaling Chubbie last night...nice to be able to hand off that little job.  He's now awaiting a date with the BBQ.
