Whats a player, and whats a gamer
« Reply #15 on: October 10, 2007, 10:41:00 AM »
IMO it's more like gamer vs simmer (is that a word? It is now). Gamers are in it just for the action / scores / bragging rights. It's just another point and shoot game to them. Simmers are in it mainly for the simulation of real combat / tactics, and the historic aspect too. The action / scores / bragging rights -is just icing on the cake to them.

Simmer, um... simer? Sim'er. Simulationer? (sheesh) Whatever they are called, I'm one of them.

Gamers exploit.  They exploit bugs in the game to their advantage (hide in windmills and hills to kill unsuspecting GV's) and/or they exploit settings to gain an advantage (turning off engine sounds).  They might blatantly cheat or they may do things most would consider unsportsmanlike (vulch a second account, kill-steal).  To a lesser degree they utilize panes and/or vehicles in unintended roles (Jabbo Lancs, fly fighters in attack mode just to save thier fighter score).

Each of these varies in it's "gaminess" and what some define as gaming, others define as playing.

In short, gamers in the AH world do things that most would find objectionable for the sole purpose of raising their scores and making themselves look better than they really are.  They "game the game" because without doing so they are simply ordinary players.

Everything else (unless I forgot something) is just playing the game and thankfully, the vast majority of the community falls into the player catagory... even most of those with high ranks/scores.

OK my definitions of GAMING THE GAME.

General player

Fighter mode
Deliberately ascertain a vulch situation.  Go for the Ho. Pinging tanks.  Repeatedly up from a capped field.  Ho every con you see when upping from a capped field.  Suicide straff runs on CV's.

Attack mode
Going in with your ords rinse repeat.  Go for the Ho.  Pinging tanks.  Upping consistantly from a capped field in IL2 or other ammo absorbing planes.  Suicide straff runs on CV's.

Bomber mode
Bomb and bail.  Dive bombing heavy bombers.  None calibrated bombing.  N.O.E F3 view none calibrated bombing.  Consistent upping from capped field.  Ack staring from capped fields.  Tank bombing in heavy bombers.  Suiciding CV's

Gv mode
Deliberate misuse of graphic settings.  PT boat spawn, fire torps, exit and repeat.

Score player

Fighter mode.
Setting up deliberate vulches.  Cherry picking with little to no risk.  Never ever shooting at anything other than a plane.

Attack mode
Only using a stuka JU87 to hit strat + re-arm repeat.  Deliberate vulches. Pinging tanks with a cannon plane.  Cherry picking again with little to no risk.

Bomber mode
Again only using a Stuka JU87 as above.  Never do supply runs.

Gv mode
Only defend. PT rocket a strat but never go up against an enemy CV. Never do supply runs.

Although "gaming the game" is done in both the above categories.  It's my opinion that the scoring gamer is less detrimental to game play.  I don't condone either I hasten to add.  If your opinion differs to mine may I draw you to a couple of facts.  There are a lot less players actually player for score than there are players.  There are far more players that don't care about score which begets a lot more players "gaming the game".

In brief Scorers are far and few between with a lot less detrimental effects to game play.  Ok their annoying because it's hard to get to them to shoot them down but I can guarantee they don't suicide, hanger bang, do NOE town bombing, sink Cv's or stall any fight anywhere.  Their goal is their own personal score not a "what ever it takes" attitude.

Of these two evils what do you see MOST of?  A guy that takes a stuka to a factory repeatedly or a guy that comes with Lancaster's at 2,000 feet and suicide dive bombs your CV.

I think I make my point.

Umm... isn't that what you're supposed to do in attack mode?  Otherwise why have ords or attack mode at all?

As to upping from a capped field, that's actualy quite detrimental to the upper (or should I say attempted upper).  I don't see where the gaminess comes into play on that one.  They are either trying to break the cap, stupid or suicidal, maybe all three.

Agree on the rest.

Ever play peek-a-boo? Same concept. You get vulchers to waste their ammo to break the cap. Its gaming.

Ok...My appols I didn't make that to clear.  When I said "Going in with your ords rinse repeat" I meant "Going in".  A deliberate death more commonly know as pork and auger.
