Odd P51 question

This is something off the military channel.  There was no explanation in the show and I couldn't find anything online.  Anybody know the story behind this?

The American flag stand for a C-47 that Cpt. Louis. E. Curdes straffed on February 10th 1944  which had just landed at a Japanese airfield on the Phillipines. He figured that it would be a Japanese plane very soon, if not having been one already.

IIRC that happened several times.  One P-61 (I think) crew shot down a US bomber that was about to land at a Japanese field.

I've read of several other stories, but I can't remember the details.

While we're onto this, the nose of the B-17 Miss Con Duct had a bunch of bomb markings, some air kills, and two ducks painted on the nose...what the heck are the ducks?

I believe the story behind that is that a U.S. C-47/R4D was going to land on a Japanese held island. The P-51 pilot carefully popped both engines on the transport forcing them to ditch at sea, and they were rescued by friendlies.

And there were several who flew both in Europe and the Pacific. The majority I read about said the Japanese were more difficult to shoot down.

Savage has the story corrrect.  It was prior to landing and the  C47 had to ditch.  Apparently it turned out that a nurse Curdes knew was on the transport as well

He's flown 38s with the 82nd FG in the MTO first where he got his LW and Italian kills.

So a C47, flown by Americans, was going to land at a Japanese field and instead of getting on the radio to ask why, the P51 shoots out its engines.  I somehow feel like I'm missing something here lol.

Sounds like he didn't like that nurse.

I'm not sure what the big deal was, the Japanese manufactured C-47s for their own use.  B-25s would occassionally shoot them down on strafing missions.

I may be wrong Sullie.. i read about this story long ago.

I think he fired on the c47's engines to make them ditch when the transport was landing on a field that had been overrun by Japanese forces and the goon pilot was apparently unaware.
