That first landing by the American Airlines plane is a Tegucigalpa, Honduras airport. I've done that and it's a scary ride.

Another wild airport is Santos Dumont in Rio de Janeiro. It's the city airport like a Love Field. Big jets land there as well....like 737s.

This ws an aborted landing at Ontario Airport in Southern California during those nasty Santa Ana winds.

Here is a video from the cockpit taking off from Cuzco. It's an Airbus A320. Have to turn up this valley to get altitude so as not to impact the hillside.

Takeoff really gets going fast because of density altitude. Plus they only fly in and out of there in the morning while it's cool.

Got stranded in Cuzco for 3 days once because of low clouds. They don't have air operations if there's much cloud cover because of the mountains.

Here's a short runway with an approach through the middle of the city in São Paulo, Brasil. This is the same airport that a TAM A320 ran off the end of the runway this past July.

Hey Mark,

Was there about a week after the TAM accident. Ended up staying in Sao Paulo the whole week for work because travel out of the city was so messed up afterwards.

It does feel like you're landing right on buildings and such. Went over near the crash area and one could see a lot of destruction. Our company lost two people in the crash.

That airport is so much easier than GRU for internal flights.

I like Brasil but Sao Paulo is not one of my favorite places.

I was late arriving at GRU so missed my flight out that day. The metro was on strike so the traffic was terrible and congested.

I rented a cab from Guarulhos to Congonhas and it took us an hour and 45 minutes to make the trip. It's normaly a 30 to 45 min ride. Made it just in time to fly out on the plane American got me a reservation on.

The crash site was still black but I think they had already removed the wreckage of the plane by that time. While I was there, in Brasilia, they imploded the building.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your co-workers.

I thought São Paulo interesting. I would like to go back and visit it some more but like you, it's not my favorite city.
