Who among you has the largest....
« on: October 16, 2007, 12:21:03 PM »
....cockroaches? Since I moved to Wyoming, I haven't seen A SINGLE cockroach! In the South, as soon as I cracked the door to enter the house at night, a roach would sail over my shoulder (seemingly as big as a B-52) and fly into the house leaving me to hunt the big b*****d down. We had the little stinky German roaches, the Red Menace, AND the big American roaches, the Brown Bombers.

I preferred the Brown Bombers because those big boys were not as numerous, didn't stink so much, and were easier to poison thanks to their voracious appetites. However, they could fly and fly well.

Do you know what it feels like to be engrossed in a movie on the tube and suddenly a roach 3 inches long runs across your face in the dark?

And why do they always feel wet?

I was stationed in Hawaii while in the Navy and the roaches there were so large they would stand their ground when you came at them.  If you went after them, they would stand there and look at you like "What do you want?"  There were lots of them too.  If it were quiet in the house you could hear the nasty little, err huge things clicking their feet across the floor.  The bad part about them in HI, everyone has roaches there no matter how clean your house is.  ICK!

Wooly, the rich folks called them Palmetto bugs. BS! They were roaches and they were in every house. I used to lay awake at night listening to carpenter ants, termites, roaches, and crickets eating my house and contents. We even had a yellowjacket nest somewhere in the attic. The yellowjackets would drop down from the ceiling light fixtures and sting the hell out of us. I had to repeatedly bug bomb the attic to get rid of them.

Rip: MY GOD! WHAT A BUG!!!!!! That rascal looks big enough to fillet!

They are bad here in Central Alabama but surprisingly enough they are not nearly as numerous around my house as they are around my parents house which is farther south. I keep a fairly good supply of bug killer around and I spray it around the doors just to keep them at bay. I also put sevin dust in all the flower beds around my carport to keep them away as well. Funny thing is those suckers always go to the clean areas to go tits up in death. My mother-in-law told me a few weeks ago that there must have been 50-75 running all over the car port when she came home from work the other night. That was the night before I put out the sevin dust. Now they aren't running anywhere but instead went there to die and there must have been 200 that we swept up over the next two nights.

It's not so bad.  You crank up the Wagner, cue up some Paul Verhoven on the DVD player, pull out a can of hairspray & your lighter, and start considering the implications of federal service and the role of the civilian in a democracy.

Yep, our cockroaches are big and nasty looking.  On the plus side, they eat the mice and rats.

Seriously, if you live near the woods with lots of dead leaves and humous, you're going to have cockroaches.  Keep the house as clean as you want, it makes no difference.  Spraying thins the herd, but never completely gets rid of them.

:rofl

Hopefully the anonymity of the internet will help.  But the sound of a crunching cockroach can ruin my day and set me on edge.  It's never intentional, but once in a while those things end up underfoot.

Hopefully, when I'm captured and being tortured in prison, my torturers won't know this.  I would sing like a canary if they played that sound over and over.

Only seen 2 in my life, they were at Sanibel Island and Myrtle Beach.

If I see one, I'll shoot it with my .45, I hate the looks of em.   They're nastyass creatures.

Also, I've heard "Tree Roaches" in AL are enormous, I'd probably pass out.

If you haven't guessed I don't like em.   If there is one thing I really hate, it's cockroaches.   I can handle anything else.

Apparently Japan did a few years back....we came in second and it was an entry by my brother-in-law who found a HUGE roach dead in his pool.  He Fed-Exed it to Texas where they had a competition.

I'll check to see if he still has his certificate.

Not exactly something to brag about, but it's true.

The female of the species we have here flies.  They look like small birds when they do.

In North Carolina we had "Wood Roaches"...imagine a roach that FLIES!

Worst were "Camel Crickets" or "Jumpy Bugs".  They look like a kind of spider, but have no fear of people and will jump on you and crawl on you if they get the chance.

Fly swatters and a heavy shoes are your friend.
