RAM upgrade

I'm upgrading my computers memory, right now I have 1 512Mb chip set already in the computer.  Now I can afford to buy from Crucial ethier 2 1Gig chip sets for a tottal of 2.5Gig's(2 1Gig's + 1 512Mb), or I could get 3 512Mb chip sets for a tottal of 2Gig's(4 512Mb's).  Which one would be the better one to go with because I know you should usally keep all the chip sets the same memory.

What is the speed on the memory? What is the speed of your current 512?

The one I'm gonna get is DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz, and I'm not sure about the one I have.  Is there a way I can tell?

The computer is about 1 year old, it's a Dell Dimension E520, not sure how to find out what my motherboard is, can you tell me how to find out.

Better make sure that's compatible with your mother board.

Like Hornet said, you need to find out whats compatible for your motherboard.  Try googling "Dell Dimension E520 motherboard" and see what kind of results you get.  Try going to Dell's website and see what memory and speed they use for upgrades.   You could probably email Crucial and ask them what they recommend.  Memory is definitly not a one size fits all kind of thing...

2nd option would be just get rid of the Dell :t

I already did, Crucial has a tool on it's website that lets you know whats compatible with your computer.

Yeah I already know that the memory is compatible with my computer, I was just wanting to know what would be better, to get 3 more 512Mb sets to go with the one I already have, or to get 2 1Gig sets to go with the 1 512Mb set I have, or to just get rid of the 1 512Mb and just get the 2 1Gig sets.

well in that case for me it would depend on the speed of your original 512.  If it was me I would get the two 1gig modules and pull the 512 out completly and save it for something later, chances are that 512 is a bit slower
