I am bringing a friend into AH and want to teach him how to play before he gives the Free Trial a whirl. How do I set up a LAN play?

Yeesh - Comedians.

Anyway, I assume that you have a handle on how to configure arena settings once your running, and simply want the "quick and dirty" how to get it running on 2+ computers.

It's wicked simple.  On the more powerful computer, select the 8 Player Option from the main screen, then Create Lan Host, and give it a name.

On the second through eighth computer, select 8 Player,  select "Select Lan Game" and choose the name you assigned your host from the list.

Voila.

EDIT -> Note, you have to be inside the same firewall, or (presumably although I've never tried) both endpoints on the same VPN for it to work.  If you're really asking "How do I use Lan play to demo AH and I'm in Seattle and he's in Saratoga Springs" then that's a whole different ball game....

On a home router, it's all automatic unless you close off the ports.
Easy in-game again.

I'd disable any personal firewall you might be using on both systems and see if that fixes it.  I use Trend Micro, and it's always "just worked" for me, but some personal firewalls (i.e. Zone Alarm) can be highly problematic.

Someone posted at one point that a slow computer can have a hard time "seeing" a much faster host, so perhaps try switching the host and the client.

What version of windows do both the computers have?
Do both computers have these services running:

Network Connections

Remote Access Auto Connection Manager

Remote Access Connection Manager

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

TCP/IP NetBios Helper Service

It may seem odd, yet a friend and I were testing around Network play using Hamachi, enabling those services allowed him to go from not seeing my arena or playing on it, to seeing the arena but not being able to play on it.

However I think that if the network is wired (your case) you might have better luck with it. The only other thing that I would recommend is installing "IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol" to both your computer connections. It allows compatibility between certain windows versions, it could help establish the LAN game.
