Polikarpov I-16
« on: October 18, 2007, 06:49:44 PM »
Because
it was the most common VVS fighter on June 21, 1941
a revolutionary combination of advanced features when introduced
flying an open cockpit plane in AH would just have to be fun

I'd fly it, heck, it would replace my D3A, and I would probably not look back.  For long.  If I remember correctly the VVS Machineguns in its nose had quite a high rate of fire for the time, and actually could pack a punch.  For small BB guns.

The question is, to me, which version we  would get.  The Type 24 (the one with the 20mm cannons) is the only one that I could see being worth a dang.  Less you wanted the Type 21 (just little machineguns) for Snapshot Scenerios and such.

On a side note, I do believe it would make a great base defender, but for different reasons than the Zero.  It takes off fast, and can carry rockets, and a few bombs.  Both of which could be quite useful during a GV Raid, or even if a CV got too close to a base.

Though, just like in WW2, I can just imagine how easy it is to down from above.  One lucky shot from just about any weapon and you suddenly have a pilot wound on your hands.  But unlike in WW2, you can whine about it after it happens, instead of bleeding to death in your half frozen over cockpit.  (I salute all the Russian pilots in WW2 that flew this thing in the winter.  They must have had some big comfy boots.)

I do seem to remember that the I-16 Mosca did have a Canopy.  But most pilots took it off because the glass on it was imperfect and would glaze over very quickly.  Not like, fog, glaze to the point you could not see out of them.  And well, that would be bad.

It'd give the Me-109E a run for its money for an early war fighter though, atleast in the Horizontal.  I am unsure if it has more Horsepower though.  I do love that big engine.  And the look of the plane is so very nice.

I'd love to see it. :aok

I've been begging for this thing forever.

The Polikarpov I-16 was produced in both high and low wing monoplane versions, both with and without enclosed cockpits, and in both single and two set trainer versions.  Quite the versitile airframe.

General characteristics
• Crew: one pilot
• Length: 6.13 m (20.1 ft)
• Wingspan: 9.00 m (29.5 ft)
• Height: 2.25 m (7.38 ft)
• Wing area: 14.54 m² (156.5 ft²)
• Empty weight: 1,383 kg (3,049 lb)
• Loaded weight: 1,882 kg (4,149 lb)
• Max takeoff weight: 2,050 kg (4,520 lb)
• Powerplant: 1× Shvetsov M-63 air-cooled radial engine, 670 kW (900 hp) driving a two-blade propeller
Performance
• Maximum speed: 460 km/h (290 mph)
• Range: 440 km (275 mi)
• Service ceiling: 9,700 m (31,800 ft)
• Rate of climb: 14.7 m/s (2,900 ft/min)
• Wing loading: 129 kg/m² (26 lb/ft²)
• Power/mass: 0.36 kW/kg (0.22 hp/lb)
Armament
• 4× fixed forward-firing 7.62 mm (.30 cal) ShKAS machine guns, a total of 3,100 rounds of ammunition.
• 6× RS-82 rockets or up to 100 kg (220 lb) of bombs

Built from 1933 through 1941 with over half still in service in 1943 the Polikarpov IL-16 was a historically significant aircraft. I was the worlds first monoplane fighter, the first with retractable landing gear, and the first with a closed cockpit (some versions). It was built in many varients over it's lifespan but the type 24 was the most used varient in WWII. The type 28 replaces two of the 7.62 mm ShKAS with to 20mm ShVAK cannons.

So it's basically an under-armed/under-powered Hurricane 2c?  :noid
