Oh... and while I feel that it is a good idea for everyone to know at least two languages...

I know that it is essential for anyone who speaks a foreign language to learn the language of the country he will be staying at.

the people most in need of learning two languages are the people who don't speak english and wish to stay in an english speaking country...  I have found that they rarely can even speak one language tho.

I think english should be the primary language, no matter. I also think that all students should be required to learn a second language. Not just one or two years in high school. It is just plain ignornant otherwise.

I took German in high school and then a few years in college. The interesting thing about the experience is that I learned more about english language and structure than I ever did in any of the english classes. I haven't had the need to speak German, and don't recall a whole lot of the specifics, but it was still a very worthwhile experience.

It is VERY hard to be successful in America if you cannot speak fluent English.

I took 2 years of German prior to going to Germany, and spoke German exclusively while I was there.  The family I stayed with was cool enough to teach me some limited Plattdeutsch (a Northern Germany regional dialect..kind of a Dutch/German mix).  I learned some Dutch by listenting to Radio Nederland Weredomroep on a shortwave radio.

In my high school (late 1970's) German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Norweigian were offered.

Our school was 50% Caucasian, 30% Black, and 20% Latino.  While Latino kids spoke some Spanish in the hallways, they ALL spoke English...very well.

Of the Caucasian kids...most came from Yougoslavian, German, Polish, Armenian, Lithuanian, Norweigian, Finn, Greek, and Irish backgrounds, and many spoke their own mother language in addition to perfect English.

Now, that same school district is 10% Caucasian, 10% Black, and 80% Latino.

Any school district that graduates kids who cannot FLUENTLY speak English in America are doing those kids a terrible disservice.

All kids need to be ready to go out in the real world and be successful.

Unless you plan to work in a Latino Groceria all your life...you are unprepared for the real world here.

I can see someone who is only here to work a year and split not learning the language...but if one plans to put down roots and stay here, learning fluent language is the only way to succeed.

I'd like to see them succeed.  That's America.

I speak two languages, English and American. Seems good enough for me, it's the language of my country of birth and the language of the country that "I decided" to reside in. Like it says I decided to come here they didn't make a special request for me to come here, with it being my decision to come here it's only reasonable for me to abide by all laws and speak the language of this country not expect them to conform to me.

America is in its final stages of glorification.

Thanks to liberal political correctness, we have now apologized for everything we are, everything we do, the language we speak, the business we conduct, and the industries we created. We have made concessions to every conceivable group, let them take us apart, piece by piece.

There was a time when America was known for kicking bellybutton and doing what it takes to make the things Americans need happen. America is now becoming known for taking it in the ass, and letting others have their way, just so we can continue to say that we occupy the moral high ground... Following right in the steps of the Europeans.

Liberal America has betrayed the spirit that built this nation, and it will not stop until everything has been handed out, and this landscape is once again leveled with the ground.

I don't see anything wrong.. in fact I think that school is doing a good thing.

Its an out-of-the-box approach to teaching a 2nd language.

The hardest thing you face when learning another language is that you do not get to practice it often.. or practice it with a native speaker. The school has addressed those issues in a rather elegant manner :)

The hispanic students get their english-only day and the non-immigrant students get to their spanish-only day.

Personally I think all schools should teach 3 languages. And each language from a different hemisphere. I'd make it: local language (in the US it'd be English), Eastern Language (any asian/pacific or middle-east language) and Old World language (any european or african language except arabic which falls under middle-east).

Each language carries with it a different way of thinking (word-thought-patterns) and nothing broadens a kid's mind like being able to think in 3 different ways.. not to mention any kid like this has a lot more options in life.

We have enough trouble getting kids to read and write in English... now you are wanting to force a 2nd language on them.

If I go to France, I would take the time to learn French, not expect them to do everything in English.

God forbid this was the school district my kid goes to, the members of the school board would need to stock up on Tums and Aspirin cause I would be the biggest thorn in the side they ever saw.

Tiger,

Your first sentence is the source of the problem. "We have enough trouble getting kids to read and write in English... now you are wanting to force a 2nd language on them."

If the kids have trouble reading and writing in their own native language they are either retarded or their parents are not involved in their education or their school sucks. More than likely, its all of the above in measured doses.

as for the 'force' comment... what's next? Lets not 'force' physics or chemistry on them because its already too hard for them to understand basic algebra? or should we not 'force' them to take world history because US history already too hard?

Lowering the standards is a bad idea.

(Language Warning)

;)

"If I go to France, I would take the time to learn French, not expect them to do everything in English."

You would take the time to learn French... wouldn't it have been much nice if you already KNEW some French because you took it in school? You send your kid to school to have a better future.. who are you to say a 2nd language is not something that will give him an advantage later on?

My native language is Spanish, English is my 2nd language, I took a little Japanese back in high school and continued taking sporadic lessons in college... and believe it or not the reason why I was hired at my last job was because I had Japanese language experience in my resume! Two years in that job and I barely had to say more than a few basic greetings in that language. Thanks to the classes that I was FORCED to take in high school I was able to land a job that paid me twice what other jobs I could get were offering. Thanks to the classes i was forced to take in high school I discovered a whole new culture which now fascinates me to no end (i've even travelled twice to Japan).

Bah...

I live in the US, we speak English here,  I read, write, and speak English.  I work for a company who HQ is Taiwan.  I am the only one in my section that does not speak Chinese,  I refuse to learn it and they know this and under my principles behind it.  They are in my country and speak my language when talking to me, they have no problem with that because they are intelligent people.  If I were to transfer to HQ in Taiwan, I'd take the time to learn Chinese so that I could conduct business in their native language, that's the way the world should work.  I wouldn't go over there and demand they everyone conduct business in English, that would be rediculous.

As far as schools and classes go... that is a totally different topic that I could go on and on about.  My wife is a school teacher, I have some nice little horror stories I could share.
