i make my own english longbows from hazel or yew.
the last one i made shot an arrow, tipped with a hardwood i obtained from Peruvian jungle indians, straight through a solid plywood door. i had to cut the arrow off on each side as there was no chance of extracting it in one piece.
i think my best distance so far with a light plastic fibre arrow was around 120 yrds. This is only about half of the range of the medieval longbows.
rough estimates from a friend who knows was that my latest bow has a draw weight of about 90-100lbs. shoot it with your right arm for a week and your triceps look deformed...
not much to shoot at in england, so i settle on paper targets or trees.
