send it back they will make it right at no charge.  the other marlin I own is the 336 in .30-30  I bagged my first deer with it and many since.  I know people pooh pooh the .30-30 as an anaemic cartridge but it is adequate for deer in brush country like we have here in my beloved florida.

Too late to send it... She went to scrap iron 32 years ago.

I love the 336.  Great rifle!
