S-300 I need to know everything in the news recently
« on: October 25, 2007, 01:31:57 PM »
I need to know everything going on in the news with regards to the S300 Russian missile defense system in the last month or two.  I don't need technical specs, I can use Wiki or Google for that.  What I need to know is who has it, who bought it in the last couple months, who has used it or anything that might put it in the news recently.  I have some leads but nothing overly concrete.  If you have some souces please post.

Does news about the S-400 qualify, since it's an improvement over the 300?

only new piece i found

Cyrus Mail, dated 5 Oct 2007
http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=35107&cat_id=1

Reacting to the allegations, Commerce Minister Antonis Michaelides rallied around the president, bringing in his role in keeping the Annan plan from our shores while pointing at the two biggest scandals of the century- the S300 missiles that the DISY government brought in and the stock exchange crash. Regarding the decision to build an offshore LNG unit, he said the idea was for it to run only five years until a land terminal could be built. He asked how it would be possible for a firm to afford all these kickbacks and make a profit on its investment given the short length of the proposed contract.

HQ-15

There has been speculations that the PLA may be considering a licensed co-production of the S-300 SAM systems in China. The Chinese copy of the S-300 was reportedly designated HQ-15. Some reports suggested that Chinese-assembled S-300 missiles using Russian-made kits have already been tested by the PLA, but this cannot be confirmed. China has the capability to initiate such a co-production but the PLA may wish to use the S-300 technology to improve its own indigenous designs such as HQ-9 instead. Another possibility is that China will only produce the missile, but not the TEL vehicles and guidance radar, to save the overall costs of the programme.

Nope, looking for the 300 specifically.

Ya, I'm not seeing a lot current either.  Am following a lead connecting to Putin's visit to Iran.  It would seem Iran has recently purchased a lesser system which coincidentally (or not) Syria uses.  Israel was able to handily defeat the system on Sept 6th when it launched an air raid into Syria.  The attack came and went before Syria even knew it was hit and Israeli forces exited without any losses.  It's speculated this was high on the agenda with the meeting of the two presidents this month.

In light of threats from the US and Israel, it looks like Iran may be planning a purchase of a more sophisticated system, namely the S300.  That being said, it might be this system which was in use when Israel attacked in Syria????

Russia gives Iran bargain on terror-ready missiles
http://www.washtimes.com/news/news3.html#link
By Bill Gertz - THE WASHINGTON TIMES 16 April 1997
"The Pentagon officials said two S-300 systems with 96 missiles
that were manufactured near Moscow this year are being offered to
Iran for $180 million -- $20 million less than the price charged by
Russia's state arms exporter, Rosvooruzheniye.... The systems are
either advanced SA-10s or the newer SA-12 ... The S-300s would
be delivered in two shipments within a year of signing a contract...
The February talks between Iranian officials and Russian arms
brokers involved the sale of three older SA-10 systems and 36 missiles
worth about $90 million. That deal, for SA-10s from components in
Russia, Croatia and Kazakhstan, fell through but is now being
brokered by a colonel in the Kazakh army..."

I guess you need to specify which variant of S-300 you are trying to hunt out. The S-300PMU for instance is a theater system for defense against tactical ballistic missiles. Other variants go against cruise missiles, fast movers, etc.

Thanks Airscrew, that pretty much confirms for me they (Iran/Syria) do indeed have a S300 system in place.

Wolfala - Any variant version of the S300 is sufficient.

I'm looking for links that may have been in the news within the last  couple months or so.  S300 system has not really been tested in combat by the sounds of it, Russia is claiming it to be better than the Patriot system.  It's really starting to look like the incident on Sept 6 in Syria is what I'm really interested in.

Unless anyone else can come up with something showing it's been used or sold in the last couple months.

I would not arrive at any conclusion on the effectiveness on the S300 based on Syrian use... if it indeed was used by them recently.

I was thinking that myself.

The other side thing which seems to be happening over there right now is all Satellite TV signals are being blocked.  The vender has verified it's equipment as working and still, no signal.  From what I gather this started happening right before the raid on Sept 6th.  The vender has talked to Israel and Syria and both are denying that they are behind this "noise"

What this tells me is that Israel has come up with a way to jam the Syrian air defence system and are keeping it turned on to tell Syria they will come back and bomb them again whenever they feel like it.

Or Syria turned in on in an attempt to block Israeli TV?

The point is, Iran has the same system and are being threatened with an air attack and feel the system they have spent millions on is now worthless.  This is what was on the agenda when Iran and Russia met.
