I'll try to answer your questions in order here.
-How much opposition? If the sides weren't even your squad is expected to split up and even sides.
--Us Avengers do not fly against each other unless in the Dueling Arena. We have found that numbers change with time through out the evening. we started out with a number advantage and ended up vastly out numbered. We of course did not complain about it because we were having a blast.
-Were you flying together as a squad? There are several squads which do that. My squad JG54 doesn't think that's a bad thing we love to fight them. At the same time we never up and fly as a squad but are continually vilified and criticized for doing so. I haven't figured that one out yet.
--Yes, we always fly as a squad, but do not look down on squads that do not.
-Also remember that vulching is something we don't do in the AvA. If someone ups from the base to defend the town you are expected to let the plane get up, get some altitude and speed, then only one should engage that plane. Again if the defenders don't equal the attackers some of you should switch. Also don't cap the base, we don't do that either.
--Our rule of thumb is if somebody rolls from a capped base, that are one bad MF'er and will be killed before thay become a threat to our operations. Equal fights take place in the Dueling arena, and we do cap bases.
-Switching is another funny thing. When there are enough players JG54 may be together on one side, nobody likes this and players cry continually. When numbers are uneven we always split up, it's an expected thing. Of course they still cry, say we're spying. Haven't figured that one out yet either.
--Been there done that; again, we switch sides once a month; unless we pork the map and it needs balanced back out.
-Then there are the rules for communication. They too are confusing. Many whine and complain constantly it seems to be ok. JG54 minds its own business until engaged. We will respond but are often criticized for doing so. Haven't figured that one out yet either. I believe it has something to do with the fact that some of us are very accomplished communicators. I guess the rule would be - if your not good at it and can't take it, it's ok to smack talk.
-- we are a fairly chatty bunch, especially after a few drinks.
-Also don't pork the dar or down the hangers.
--This may be necessary at times for us to accomplish our mission goals.
