P-51B dogfight capability..
« on: November 03, 2007, 05:27:34 PM »
Incoming Whine
Has the B-Pony been changed? It's just a shade of it's former self.

It can't turn anymore, flaps don't really help and it feels heavy and sluggish.

It's nowhere near the D-Pony in overall capability. Okay, it never was but it used to be a lot better than now. Especially in the "precision" and handling department it was better than the D.

Is it just me? :(

Not sure, but I know there was/is a big ol' discussin about how the pony's flaps should make for a tighter/faster turn.

It should outturn a 190 with 1 notch (190a8), but as of older times, I remember taking some 10 circles in a Spit XIV vs a P51D before seeing I was making some progress. And that's not quite...right IMHO.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Thanks Widewing.. the voice of reason :)

I didnt remember those threads, interesting read (again). I don't fly the -B very often and as such, it comes as a nasty surprise not being able to turn with a Lala (or even a light Jug..).

In earlier days of AH2, it used to be able to hang with a La7 long enough to panic most La drivers and force them into something stupid. Eventually, the Lala (at MA combat alt) will prevail, but not without a fight. These days there's no contest.

Ok, that is last year's news but the question is: is the new P-51 correct? :huh

What direction?

Because if it was a left hander, that torque monster was fighting you.

The 51's flaps are bugged like the 38's were, but not quite to the same extreme.

I belive it was to the right. Haven't flown the XIV in a while, but I remember the engagement. I actually jumped the 51 shortly after takeoff from a deacked field. If I recall right, I shot him down, and it was BTW some good stick. Can't remember who though. "Papy" perhaps...
