Another pony skin!
« on: November 04, 2007, 06:32:37 PM »
Hey guys, first time im skinning, i think it looks pretty well!

353rd Fighter Group / 352nd Fighter Squadron
44-14495
P-51D
Pilot: Lt. Frank H Jr.

I've seen a couple of pictures/artworks of this plane. A few with the invasion stripes and yellow tail like it has here, and a couple with only 1 black stripe over the wing and over the tail.

I choose for the invasion stripes/yellow tail because i like it much better.

Although all pony slots are full, i will submit it, and maybe i'l get in some sort of que (at least i hope so).

Very nice work!   The only thing I can suggest is to do a search on the font "AmarilloUSAF" - download it and use it for your squad ID letters and serial numbers.    Its the authentic font.

Also, you might want to check the font, size and placement of your noseart.   And I'm not sure they kept the upper surface DDay wing stripes after they removed them from the top rear fuselage.  In fact both your image and mine show the wing DDay stripes completely removed from upper and lower wing surface. Beautiful skin, though.    Real attractive scheme for a '51.  Nice choice.

What's this about all pony skin slots being filled?  Is there a certain number of in game skins allowed?

Oh, and how about doing this one, do you like it at all?

Is this a "copy and paste" like your Jumpin Jaques Skin you made?

Or is it all by hand..if it's the latter, it looks great.

No! NOOOO! (In Eric Cartman voice).  So how long between each rotation, and how is it determined which skins make the cut?  By HTC, popular vote?  If its HTC, do they just use the ones they like, or which they feel are most crucial historically wise, etc?

And yeah, I know the skin was in the game at one point, (after seeing it in a squaddies film ((which is why I wanted it)) but then couldn't figure out why it wasn't in game.

Thanks for the info anyways.

MotleyCH - This is my first ever paint, i never did a "jumpin Jacques" paint. U must have been confusing me with someone else. I did this one all by hand.
But thank you :)

oboe - i will check that fond, the one i used here is the famous "Coca-Cola" font :).

Oboe, i just checked the amarillo font, but i've been stupid and saved the skin merged and not in layers, this could be a long time untill i could replace the squad markings and noseart.

This is the picture btw with the invasion stripes:

DaDonkey i've seen that pony skin u posted on ah-skins.com, better check that.

OK before you get to far.  If the D-Day stripes are on top of the wings, they're on top of the fuselage.

They came off the top of wing and fuselage at same time.

Below the wings came off before below the fuselage as well.

Don't go by someone's painting or profiles too unless you've got photos to go with it.

Note there are no D-Day stripes under the wing.  This is Fall 44 when only the fuselage stripes remained under the star and bar.  Note the white of the stripes has bee 'grayed' out too.  Codes and ID bands are in black not blue.

Also note that your serial number is too low on the tail and the black ID band too wide.  Not trying to be mean about it btw, just know that folks want them to look as good as possible :)

Oh and for what it's worth.  The 353rd didn't transition to Mustangs so they never would have had a fully D-Day striped Mustang ever.  They should not have wing stripes underneath as well as they were off by the time the 353rd transitioned.  Half fuselage stripes is the most a 353rd Mustang would have

It was'nt Lil' Butch cut last rotation. It was Red Dog from 4th FG. Think Lil' Butch might have been before the P-51's 3d model was updated.
