It's this type of behavior that makes the ranking laughable, and I think that's why people detest this sort of gaming the game. Could be completely wrong, but I can't imagine why else people who themselves don't bother trying to pad their ranks would have any sort of interest in, or dislike of, this kind of thing.
This is one of few games where there's not some overall comparison or scoring (meaningful, anyway), and I suspect many would like to have such a system. Every time someone goes out of their way to influence the rankings, by hook or by crook, it always receives a fair amount of attention, much of which is negative.
I wonder how much of this would continue if HT quit putting them at the top of their website. I never pay much attention to the website itself anymore (I pretty much only go there if there's an announcement on the forum), but were the dueling ladder winners ever rewarded? Top squadrons? Most helpful trainers? Skinners? The guys who created soundpacks? Filmmakers? Special Events results? People with the most accounts?
