LOl ~ check it out on snopes. This photo was taken during the MIDDLE of the national anthem. Wasn't taken 'just before' or 'just after' for photo advantage. It was never up there at all. Snopes includes the video.

*edit* yes, I know. It's so appalling that your mind runs to "that had to be some cheap shot a photographer was taking to use falsely against him."

The original salute to the flag was the arm extended straight out, changed in 1940s because it too closely resembled Nazi salutes. Now we have another change, as the hand over the heart was too easily confused with a heart attack.
