Lets talk about Gunnery - lets talk about you and me..
« on: February 12, 2000, 09:49:00 AM »
Having only resently started to play AH reguarly I'm having trouble with my gunnery % - as would be expected. In WB I was around 10-12 now in the sub 5 area.Started to use zoom (z button) wich has bettered it some (!), just as I'm trying to restrain myself from early shooting.
My ACM is ok and getting better, usually I get guns solution at least once or twice no matter what (if Im not running heh) - but what help is that when all you get is holes in the sky..
Now : I've noticed that many pilots are in the 7-12 area, and a good deal even above that.I imagine all you good people started out somewhat below what you are getting now.

Tips ans Tricks?

And if you wont tell, just talk about sex ;=)

I recommend not using zoom, it changes all of your visual cues.  Your gunnery will increase to your WB level once you get used to things.

Worr's gunnery lecture still applies:
 http://www3.imagiconline.com/training/worr-gunnery.html

The rest is just getting used to the different gunnery model.  I played WB for a long time, but if I switch back now I can't hit anything.  Not that my gunnery has ever been that great...

Im no sharpshooter, and dont have any tips or tricks, except flying the cannon hog
The best thing to ever happen to my gunnery was playing DOA. You really need to keep guns on target, with a long burst to get a kill.

The big visual change for me talking gunnery between WB and AH are the not-so-visible tracers - simply feel uncertain if "walking the tracers" the right way.Amatter of hours in flight no doubt.

Now for some sex:

Camel I have to agree with you about DOA.
Back when it was in open beta & I flew it a fair amount my gunnery in WB went from below 10% to a steady 15%

Not sure what it is about that sim that does it, but it does make an obvious differnce.
My biggest problem in there however is trying to stay alive in a arnea full of camels.

I dont recommend the zoom feature.  It cuts down on your field of vision and you arent going to have the same level of SA as if you dont use it.

My only suggestion is to stick with a plane and learn it inside and out.  Each of these weapons are modeled differently and the cannon round speed and trajectory of a Niks 20mm is different than the Stangs 50cal.

Here is a tip:  Pick a plane which fires rounds slowly and which has a fairly small ammo load like the Niki.  Dont fire during hard maneuvers and wait until the target is inside of 300yds.  You will learn to only fire during high percentage shots.

Dont worry bro....I came from Air Warrior and the big hit bubble and had a 3% hit percentage after the first beta campaign.  I now have a much more respectable 7%....(I still have a tendency to spray a bit  )

Still being the ranking champion of bad gunnery (check the scores) notes; firing in plane with your target is deceptive, you think you should hit, but bullets tend to curve (ballistics) Firing out of plane with your target, gravity makes a big difference here, the few planes I manage to hit are either 1) above me as I rise into plane with them I tend to elevate which compensates,
2) very close high angle off crossing targets
which fly into my bullet stream (hard to do with slow firing NIK)
Hey HTC, could the Japs capture a shipment of Hispano's? I'd like to see the spits and cannon Hogs start worrying

Those Navy cannon(Type-99) sucked. The Army had a decent cannon(Ho-5).

Get close. When you think you are close enuff; get closer.

Avoid like the plauge long sustained streams of fire. The guns ain't a firehose. Use short bursts.. one thing that almost always works is the 'tap'.

Example: You are following a target outside of certain letahlity range. He's not giving you much to shoot at, so give him a short burst with your secondaries. If he reacts with a break; (spits; niki's and macchi's always do) lead turn him and pound his planform with a close deflection shot.

On a slightly diffrent topic: When someone else on yer team sez DANISH BREAK RIGHT.. do it fer chrissakes, THAT INSTANT. He's tellin you he has no shot on the guy on yer six and needs you to pull him into a turn so he can kill him

If yah don't, and remain fixated on the guy you are chasin, the guy tryin ta save yer bellybutton may wind up dead himself. (humph, just as I did) And that makes a guy think twice about tryin ta save yer butt the next time.

Salute!
