Not sure why you say it's been successful in North Korea... That place isn't run as a communist state by any stretch of the imagination. It's a dictatorship and the folks at the top say it's a communist paradise to explain why the general populace is so poor and miserable, has zero freedom, and can't own anything (it's for the common good you see?)

China... That's a different story and you have to realize that there are many Chinas right now. The country is divided into various regions, and they're all run a bit differently. Some cities are prosperous by western standards, and some are nearly as poverty stricken as Somalia (but better behaved, what with the lack of islam and male dominated culture of rape and racial hatred).

China wasn't organized on the soviet communist model, so although I'd call it a marginal success even though many of their recent gains in standard of living are the result of embracing free market concepts, it's not quite the same.

But North Korea... It's a bigger failure than the Soviet Union was. The NKs are just so dirt poor and hungry, they don't have the ability to pressure the Jonger into giving up power. The country is quite neatly divided into little pockets of poverty with almost no travel and little communication other than what the govt transmits. It's really quite pitiful but there isn't much we can do to help.

One of my GrandFathers was a son of a village blacksmith. Revolution gave him an opportunity. He was born in 1916, commanded Jet Mortars, retired in 1966 as a Colonel who served in East Germany storing nuclear warheads for our missile corps.

Revolution gave him everything he had in his life. Without Revolution he could probably become a village priest, if he was allowed to learn how to read.

What neoconservatives associate, infer or classify as "communist" is generally anything that ain't neoconservative. Which oft accounts for neoconservative confusion in thinking socialism is a form of communism.
