The Toughest Plane in AH?
« on: February 12, 2000, 08:26:00 PM »
Just an impromptu poll for curiousities sake.

Try to keep you answers brief and please keep the flames to a minimum.  There are three questions below and my answers to them.

What is the toughest plane to shoot down?

The F4U, because it is just one tough plane tough and takes alot of damage.

What is the next toughest plane to shoot down?

The 109, because it has almost F4U toughness plus it is a much smaller target.

What is the easiest plane to shoot down?

The 51, because its tail control surfaces, especially the vertical stab, come off so easy for alot of snap shots.

Let me hear from you if you have a second to respond.  Thanks!

Mino

Easy answers:

The toughest plane to shoot down is the one directly in front of me.

The easiest plane to shoot down is the one Im in.

Thanks for the opportunity to get this off me chest.

In terms of the damage they can take, it should be:
1. B-17 / F4U
2. B-26 / Fw190
3. Bf109

You know Yeager, I have tried to fly on your wing a couple times, and you generally auger in after shooting down some hapless victim.

I know I suck, and awhile back someone started a rumor that I was a hot stick, this made me quite a target.

Now I have found a squadron, and I get the ocasional six call, and am able to prosecute a clear without generally falling to great detriment.

The most difficult, and most amazing I have seen it the Macchi 205 Veltro, I put about 9 seconds of .50Cal with a P-51 into one the other night, and Towd said he hit the same plane also.

This plane wasn't even smoking, and was exiting the area, he ran out of gas. I made two more passes at him with the pony, and Towd was closing in.

This guy managed to ditch his Veltro!!!!!!

That was a tough plane.

The 205 does not take HO's well at all. Guaranteed dead engine on one ping. But it does soak up a heck of alot of lead if the enemy shooting is coming up on it's 6 area.

Obviously the heavyweight radial jobs oughta be on top.  After that the N1K2 and P-51 should be significantly stronger than lightweight planes like Spitfire, Me 109, or 205.

Toughness wise I think beyond all doubt the B-26 is the hardest to knock down. In the fighters F4u wins hands down, For awhile I was playing with 7.9mm and watched an F4u soak up a susatined 3 second burst (It was Bull actually) picking off ailerons and dmaging stabs but still not smoking him up at all

The veltro takes alot of damage but seems to keep ticking too. Surprisingly I think the NIK2 is close to it in ability to take punishment too. I have found 109 and 190 tend to break easily under 7.9 mm , they don't neccesarily go down but they get vital damage very soon.

I'd like to know where ya'll are getting your Veltros.  When I'm in the pit of one in a tight fight with anything, 2 crunches and I'm down, and there have been a lot of no-ping 'miracle' kills on my Veltro too.

F4u and N1K2 definetly takes most of the lead before wrecks apart.
Somehow I wonder why Minotaur says that P-51 is weak, for me, its been quite tough (but not as tough as N1K2)
I have been using 7.92mm to shoot down planes, N1K2 did take loads of those, but others did go down easier.
(I wonder why its write as 7.9mm in the game, isn't it 7.92mm)

N1K2-J tough eh? It took me only a single ShVAK hit to remove it's wingtip from about 300 yards, 90º deflection...
