Im just daydreaming here so bear with me.

Imagine if when in the hangar you could upgrade planes with perk point you have. If it goes down you lost alot of perkies.

Lets say you could add things like high speed flaps, cannons,engines, (no jets) bubble canopy, gunsights, pilot armor.

What kind of monster would you create?

Mine would be a P40E airframe

Add-ons would be:

2 - cannon
Spit Engine
F6F gunsight

Haha, I'd use the A6M5b.

4x 20mm Hispano's
Corsair Flaps and Rudder.
Hellcat Armor
Spit Engine

remove 7.9mm MGs+ammo
Select 3xMinengeschoss 1xAP sequence instead of the current generic 20mm
Add Supercharger (it doesnt have one, right?)

put merlin engines on the p-38, put the p-47 props on the merlins.

although not a historical weapon, id remove all guns from the 38 and replace with a single .303 API/APHE gatling gun and 6000 rounds of ammo.

id be happy with a super-accelerating p-38 that would have a top speed of 500 and an a-10 like gun on it. After all, why simply shoot them down when you can make them scream before, during and after you shoot them down?

The F4U-4B had 20mm's but I'm not sure if and D-ponies did. Early mustangs had them.

Well, most of the suggestions here are *a bit* out of this world engineering-wise.

One that would be mostly doable...

Take Bf109G-2, loose the machine guns to save weight, switch the canopy to G-14's Erla-one, replace 20mm-cannon with the 30mm one and the MW-50 would add the final touch.

Also, the deeper oil cooler from the G-14 might be good for keeping oil temp in check as well.

It would be more maneuverable and slightly faster than a G-14 and would out climb the K-4.
