Individual Trim Usage vs Auto Trim Usage

Hi Folks,

I would like to know if using the individual trim commands for ailerons, elevators & rudder to center your controls-like the RL WWII pilots did-gives the best feel & control of the FM's in AH than using the auto trim commands.

I've done some limited testing & this seems to me to be the case but I haven't flown AH enough yet to get a good feel of it's FM's so I'm asking y'all for input.

When I fly it's pretty much in the Mid War arena so y'all know the planeset that I fly most.

Any comments?

Different strokes for different folks.  Using the trim with a good joystick can help get a LITTLE extra from the plane.  However it's not essential if you know your stuff already.  Can be a bit of a fiddle in the midst of a fight.  Pitch trim helps when compressing & when flaps are deployed especially in Corsairs.

Definitely regarding the F4Us. The flaps give the Hog a HUGE nose-up bump. I generally have to trim elevators full-down while landing (on the other hand, they're beautiful for swinging your guns onto a target who thinks he's out of reach).
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I think the only plane where I use manual trim is the P-38, and then only to pull out of fast dives near the ground, where full stick deflection isn't giving me enough pitch.  After that, I go back to using combat trim.

as LYNX stated, it is all a personal preference really.....

I prefer to take any plane in the game I am flying  and trim it out in level cruise speed....for most planes this is in the 275 IAS ( white needle ) to 325 or 350 IAS mph.........

only time I consider using the combat trim is in planes that have lost 1/2 a wing or an aileron or has become damaged in one aspect or another.......or  if  I am in a down and dirty dogfight with an opponent flying the same plane type....that knows what they are doing...

I find I can sqeeze  more performance from a plane flying it trimmed out like this rather than fighting the "nose-up pitch" that combat trim seems to induce, especially when slow.

If you are using combat trim, and flying slow, and using flaps, combat trim can become your worst enemy......combat trim and flaps will be fighting each other in a sense.

now when you are coming over the top of a loop and start to nose down / dive  you will be fighting combat trim as well, and will take longer to pick up speed

where as if you are trimmed out nuetral ( or what I call trimmed to level cruise speed for particular plane type ) you can gain a bit more speed faster and not be fighting the reaction of combat trim.......

but as mentioned above, it really is  Different strokes for different folks.......

edit: as for flaps giving a nose-up bump and people who have problems with the bouncing nose syndrome.......I'd suggest trimming out to have a slight nose-dwon aspect, or in other words to where you have to maintain a slight easy pull on the stick when flying level..this will help with the bumping nose up , when slow and using flaps, and will also help when lining up / saddling up for a shot, you will have better control of holding bore site on your target and not be bouncing all around fighting the trim settings of combat trim.....

I use manual trim, 99+% of the time.  I'm used to doing so from previous sims, and I like the extra control it gives me.  I will flip autotrim on and then off again when trim gets too far out of whack, and then manual trim from there, because the manual trim takes %*@(# FOREVER to respond to movements, while the autotrim gets 95% of the way there instantly.

And if I'm making a dive bombing pass I'll usually turn autotrim on, because you can't really "mark" where you'd want to trim to and then adjust to that prior to your dive as you would have in real life.  

I'd actually prefer to use my rotary controls (or my extra throttle levers as stand ins for rotary controls) like I do in TR and as I did in WWIIOL - and as they did in real life.

But AH is problematic when it comes to that - trim surfaces don't move in conjunction with the axys you've mapped them to, they moves as though very  severely dampened, at what appears to be the same rate that they move if you simply hold down a key that's mapped to the manual trim adjustment.  

This makes it nearly impossible to trim using more the realistic controls - you can't tell where you've trimmed to until as many as 3-4 seconds after you've moved the axis control, which ends up causing flying to become a bigger battle with trim than with enemy aircraft.

Add to that mess the fact that there is a severe lack of decent FF flight gear which means you can't feel in the stick force whether your in trim or not to begin with (as you did in RL), and the only halfway reasonable "solution" seems to be to use the key or button based manual trim adjustments with autotrim as a "get me there quick key".

ALL IMO, of course.

I got totally used to individual trim when I 1st bought the X52 . I have since upgraded to the X52 pro. The LOOOOONG bombing missions it gives me something to do. I do however set auto climb on when I needa go grab "BEVERAGE of CHOICE' or nature calls. But Like LYNX said, different strokes for different folks.
