So... my computer died...
« on: November 28, 2007, 01:41:15 AM »
Alllrighty then.  I need smart computer people to give me a hand here.

My old compy (XP, 256ram, 2.9ghz, blah, blah, blah, 5 years old or so) died.

Well, not died...  We don't actually know what's wrong with it.  The Hard Drive works, we tore it out, and shoved it into a friends computer.   Fans all work.  Everything worked fine for a long time.

Suddenly, about 2 days ago, I'm sitting at it, and it stops connecting with the mouse, or keyboard.  Then bamf, the monitor stops receiving a signal.

So, I restart, seems like the right thing to do, problem is...  She doesn't restart.  Turn it off, turn it on.  Monitor gets no signal.  It makes all its lights and sounds, and pretty noises, and nothing happens.  Cd trays worked, managed to snatch IL2 1946 (Screw your min. requirements!) out of it, before later that day...

Nothing.  Nothing at all.  No lights, no sounds, nothing.  Turned it off to let it rest, tried turning it back on a few hours later, and... yeah.

Everything is hooked up right inside, its nice and clean, and all that nice stuff.  It's like its not getting power.  Which, tells me there is something wrong with the power supply.

I want y'alls opinions, most of you guys have been working with computers a lot longer than myself, and I am far from an expert in anything related to the poor thing.

So, any of you guys get the same basic conclusion as myself?
Any help at all is much appreciated.

(I'm on my friends laptop right now, which is better than my compy, in just about every way cept' total space...  But it's just not the same, yo.)

i think youre on the right track.. when I was still building my own boxes, I had power supplies go out twice...  first time I was a little boggled because it was more of a gradual death -- like yours, until one day the pc was just off and not startable..  the second time I was present when it went in spectacular fashion, so I was able to _smell_ it  :)

it's worth a try, easy to replace and they're cheap!

Could check voltages also but sor of confimed quarters areound most PSs.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Came back from 3 days at the inlaws. Wifes computer refused to boot. 3 fans are stuck, chipset, video, and one case fan, unplugged them and tried again. Nope, still no go. Looks like power supply is out.

So after 2 hours of tearing my hair out, I start a game on mine. 10 min later mine crashes, & reboots itself, when it came up somehow it had screwed up a windows driver that does plug and play. So I had no sound no matter what I did, tried.

Eventually gave up and did a repartition, reformat, reinstall. So I'm back up & running with the bare bones. But I'm going like WTF did I do to deserve this????

BTW when I'm troubleshooting a iffy system, unplug EVERYTHING but power supply, motherboard, video. Unplug the dvd/cd drives, all usb devices, get it down to BARE bones. If it still won't run, its one of 4 things. Power supply, motherboard/CPU, Hard drive, Video.

Sorry bout the slow response guys, had the internet here go out for... a few... days, yeah, I missed junk.

We've torn it down some, and we think the only thing wrong is the power sup.  I'll get it fixed soon, if I get lucky.   Thanks for the tips though.
