One of my favorite ladies: Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Also interesting in the book (but not enough info without getting a few extra books) is William the Marshal ~ served under 5 kings in their family.

If you haven't read it, read Is Paris Burning? by Larry Collins and Dominique LaPierre.  True story about the French Underground in Paris working with German General von Choltitz to save the city from Hitler's order to burn it to the ground.  I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it.  Very interesting and well written documentary.

Les

Edit:  I didn't read it in French, but shouldn't be too hard to find the French version.

Try this its a classic of Froggy literature. A thrilling novel detailing Napoleons invasion and retreat in russia. This "Liver Frenchy" has it all. And he apparently stops in a mansion for entertainment on his way out. Says so on the back cover.

I suggest "Les Rois Maudits" 1 to 6 by Maurice Druon.
Excellent history books about intrigues around french kings (starting with Philippe le Bel). It reads as easily as the Lord of the Rings. But your french vocabulary needs to be pretty good.

Be aware that the 7th book is crappy.

To Ouaibe: sorry but Amélie Nothomb is waaaaaay overrated IMHO. And I'm belgian...
