Anyone use Gimp?
« on: December 03, 2007, 04:55:40 PM »
Was thinking about trying my hand at some skins, but I don't have Paint Shop Pro.

I D/L'd Gimp last night, and was wondering if anyone has tried using this program for skinning?

Thanks:aok

I used it until it began refusing to run on my system. Was a great program until then. Just remember the file management is based for Linux.

No no, there is a Windows version. On saving/loading some users get very confused because it uses Linux style navigation. Keep in mind that it's designed to run on Linux and the Win version is a side project. May be a cause of it not running on my system any longer.

I have used it a great deal.  It will work just fine for making skins.  The documentation on how to use it is lacking, so I recommend running as many of the tutorials on http://www.gimp.org as possible to learn how to make the most of the capability.  You'll need to concentrate on layers, paths, and selections in order to get the most out of the program for skinning.

Good Luck,

Stoney

Other than it's cost when Gimp is free, nearly exactly the same in function, and more expandable, you mean?

Photoshop is THE industry standard in imaging programs. GIMP is to Photoshop as Linux is to Windows. They're trying to replicate and improve on the big-guy's corporate version.

So, in a word, Yes.

If you're just experimenting or determining whether or not you want to be serious about skinning--use GIMP, its free.   If you get serious, you can always buy Photoshop.

Splitatom, PhotoStudio works just fine.  I've used it many times to make skins for custom maps.  I've used that and Gimp and think PhotoStudio is much easier and straight forward than Gimp.

I think I may try to do a JG11 109K4 skin with GIMP... dont hold your breath, theres a good chance I may get frustrated and quit after 30 seconds... Ive never been able to get good with computer artwork.
