Sober Marine Officers are not to be trusted...  Awesome.  I knew two decendents of his squadron members, I just didn't know at the time who they were.  I bet they had some good stories...

Wow, its awesome to think that the little old man in the picture at one time flew the best fighter plane the U.S. had to offer, commanded men in combat, and actually killed people.  And just think, general aviation prop planes still don't even come close to what Boyington flew.

One question he really got a kick out of....

I had a book of "Where are they now" kind of updates on famous people, and in that book it stated that Pappy had died in Seattle in 1978.

I read him the passage and asked him how is he feeling....for a dead guy?

He chuckled and said " I feel great...and it wouldn't be the FIRST time that they tried killing me off before my time."

The other question I got a kick out of was "When you were shot down just prior to your capture...what when through your mind when you realized your plane was no longer flightworthy?

He chuckled again and said..."well Greg...You SOB...you've really had it now".

(This was back when I weighed about 100 pounds more than I do now, and yes, go ahead with the "80's Hair" jokes...it was OK way back then)

80's hair style...... Huh ! more like the 70's. I guess the 80's was like the 70's in the Ozarks.

P.S. You think a life of smoking and hard drinking had anything to do with Pappy's awesome complexion :rofl

My father met him at a Wild Weasel reunion in 1980.  He was a guest speaker at an event.  from my fathers accounts, He was drunker than a waltzing pissant and was really having a good time of it.  He made a point in saying everything bad about the AirForce (Army AirCorps) and everything good about the Marine Aviator.  He didnt make many friends in the 105 ranks but my father liked his no care attitude.   to Pappy and all those flying in the past and present.
