I won't speculate in the validity of this story, but it's a cool story nonetheless:

Interesting story...

That's about the 3rd or 4th episode in dog fights where the jery's had 25+ more planes during the engagement...  They must like flying in hordes....

I don't think Robin Olds was ever one prone to telling stories.  Considering his combat record from WW2 to Vietnam, I'd tend to believe what he's saying.

Interesting to read some of the comments below the video.  Lots of one book wonders there trying to explain how it didn't happen.  Love the guy who says the appearance of a 51 in August 44 couldn't have happened as they weren't in combat yet.

Maturity is knowing that I've been an idiot in the past.
Wisdom is realizing I will be an idiot in the future.
Common sense is trying to not be an idiot right now

Olds has always seemed to be a pretty straight guy. The real deal. Not some "Kit" Carson. It's not like the story was overly self promotional, from forgetting to switch over to his internal tanks and having his engines die to entering compressibility and barely surviving the incident.

He also served as Commandant of Cadets at the Air Force Academy (appointed to restore morale and honor after a cheating scandal) and went on to get 4 Mig Kills in Vietnam flying F-4s.
