Take some time to work through the tutorials.  Concentrate on the ones that discuss layers, selections, and paths.  Also, take a blank, and start using all the different tools so you know what they're capable of.  There is a steep learning curve, but if you're patient enough to work through some of the tutorials, you'll get a lot of functionality for free.  I use it all the time now, especially to manipulate computer images that aren't related to skinning, and I haven't spent a dime on software to do it.
