Air to ground rockets
« on: December 12, 2007, 01:49:48 PM »
Has anyone ever taken down a plane using air to ground rockets?  Just wondering.

I attacked a set of B-24's last night in my F6F while carrying 2 1000 lb eggs and full rocket rails.  I got all 3 with my .50's (I got to land 6 kills that sortie :) )  but was wondering if I might have been able to get them with the rockets.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Yes, have scored both bombers and a fighter with the Air to Ground rockets of the FW190F-8.  The bombers were accidental, went to fire cannons and rockets launched, so I closed in and fired them again.  Blamo!

Once bagged a P-38 the same way as well.

Not recommended.

EDIT: Can't recall which Fighter type I got that way now...

Yes.  A lone B-17.  Got real close(400 to 600) in the HellKitty and unleashed all 6 at once.  My .50's were dry.  Oh well, I got the nice explosion anyway!  LOL

Yes Baldeagle... in a heavy 38, salvo'd 4 at a time, compensated for the drop and got lucky and killed all 3 '24s:aok

yes it's very possible. the p38j does it really well, you can hit buffs from 1000 yrds, and usually get 2 or 3 with one well placed rocket.

I've tried a few times but missed.  I HAVE successfully vulched w/ rockets on a few occasions though.  The best is when they are about 10 feet off the ground.  Better explosion!:D

If you fan 'em out it's best, from what I hear. You only need to hit with 1, and the blast will kill all 3.

I took out a flight of Lancs about to drop on a GV base with a front qrt volley of rockets from a Mossie.

2 Blew up and the third lost a wing tip.

Does a plane's explosion have splash damage tied to it, like bombs and HE shells do?  I don't know how "soft" that detonation would be...

I don't know if the plane itself has splash, or if it just triggers the splash of the bombs/rockets, but there is some splash damage going on, that much I know.

my fave trick on low cons over water is to fire rocket infront of the con, the water splash kills them.... ;)

(not sure if it counts as a "kill" though, may only count as a proxy!)

I once tried to bounce a formation of Ju-88s, salvoing all of my rockets off at once, killing a drone. Wolfala's pretty good at this trick, but I've never been able to repeat it.

I don't think planes exploding have any splash damage, only the rockets.

Now, rocket vulching- that's fun. Close is often close enough. :)

I popped 2 lancs with a single WGr 21 once, does that count?

I giggled like a school girl, but...er... that's beside the point.

The air-to-air ones on the 110 work good for bomber formations.  Have got all 3 with one rocket right in the middle from a low 6 shot.  Took the tail off the center and the wingtips off the drones.  Air-to-ground work as well and if you do fan them out your right, you can get a couple.

I really want to spill the beans and have bragging rights for the biggest cheating bastard secret as pertains to formation killing power... but it would just be an ephemeral pleasure. Soon enough everyone would use it and I'd rather have that all for myself :D
