Christmas helps destroy the environment
« on: December 12, 2007, 05:40:06 PM »
As the holiday season once again gets under full swing, I can not help but get a chuckle out of all the "environmentalists" who string row after row of lights on their homes, cut down trees to place in their homes or wreaths on their doors, and waste massive amounts of gas chasing after gifts.

In particular, is one young couple that has a few nice bumper stickers on their cars (Subaru and Land Rovers).  The high lights of which are "Save the Planet - Think Green" ; "Stop Global Warming" ; "Prosecute Big Oil" ; and my personal favorite "Impeach Bush"

The laugh I really get when I drive by their house, is the literal airport sized display of lights all over their home.  It seems to be a bit hypocritical to me.

Doesn't putting up Christmas lights cause your home to use more energy?  Especially when your community, like mine, relies on coal powered power plants.

Doesn't cutting down spruce trees in the national forest cut down on the planets ability to remove green house gases?  I know in the Pikes Peak National Forest, they do not replant the spruce trees.

Isn't giving gifts and toys made out of plastic just putting more money in the pockets of big oil?   Plastic is a petroleum byproduct.

So anyways, in keeping with the spirit of the science used to defend the global warming theory, I propose this:

Christmas causes global warming.

You should make a sign stating all those things and place it in their front yard in the middle of the night so it's the first thing they see when they walk out the front door.

Would be good for a laugh anyway.:aok

Naw... too much work.  Funny idea though.  I think putting up republican candidate signs on their lawn is far more amusing.

Just a few things Bodhi...

I can understand why you would think some of those things...

BUT-

Trees and garlands sold at Christmas time were more than likely planted for that purpose.  Meaning... if it weren't for the schmucks that buy them, they may not have been planted in the first place.  So the market for x-mas trees is actually good for the environment because the earth gets the benefits of a living "breathing" plant for 5-15 years before it is harvested.

And new Christmas lights such as the ones that I'm using are actually LEDs which use a fraction of the energy needed compared to their incandescent brethren.  Basically, all you have to do is switch off a regular light bulb and you will have saved more energy than you need to run several strings of them.

As far as running around in cars to do shopping... well you got me there :lol :rofl

I do most of my shopping online nowadays... and all i need is a small nuclear reactor to power my cpu and monitor and I'm good to go :aok

It's unseasonably warm around these parts right now, but that has only been for a few days and it's not all that unusual.  It hardly ever gets cold here during December.  About every ten years or so it snows around Christmas.

But I imagine a lot of extra gas is used up this time of year.  Whether that has anything to do with global warming is anyone's guess I suppose.  Thing about it is, it seems I see fewer and fewer houses decorated up for Christmas.  I like to see the Christmas lights, even though I don't do my house with lights.

Bumper stickers on cars are kind of a bad idea imo.  It may seem hypocritical with the bumper stickers, but you can't be sure the one who drives that car is the one who is so enthusiastic about lights and trees and all.  I'd just enjoy the lights and be happy someone still puts them up.

On the other hand I can see the humor in your point, and while it may or may not be valid scientifically from the extra pollution standpoint, I'm not buying the idea it would affect the big picture so much it would warrant special energy saving restrictions or legislation similar to the "energy crisis" of the early 70s.  Anyone remember that?  I don't really remember it clearly, but I think gas was rationed for a while to the gas stations and you could only get so much.  This had nothing to do with hurricanes but was nationwide.  If I remember correctly, it turned out to be just a big hoax and there was no energy crisis.

And lets not forget that something like 90% of all artificial Christmas trees are made in China.
And we all know the quality products they produce.:p

He's still got you on the lights as well.
While they are indeed using less energy then the old style conventional lights.
Your still using more energy then you would be using if you ran none at all.

Yes, but if he uses enough lights then the lights will produce enough heat to heat his home, eliminating his need for oil, and thus saving energy!:D

Picture lights on the scale of having planes trying to land on your roof, to get that much heat.
