Any one else grind yer teeth
« on: December 13, 2007, 10:52:17 AM »
I wasnt aware I did til a few months ago.  From time to time, would wake up with sore jaw muscles.

I see the dentist Monday and get fitted for a night guard/mouthpiece thingy.  Apparently its pretty common.

All I know is dang, the headache/sore jaw muscle/sore neck thing really sucks today!

my girlfriend does all the time!

its so loud sometimes it wakes me up and i have to elbow her in the ribs.

i think it has sometimes to do with inner stress, when she has a long night of grinding and i speak to her in the morning i generaly try to ask if she has anything pressing on her mind, usualy she does and the next night she sleeps like a log....so do i :)

my opinion?

dont get the mouth gaurd, spend sometime with a trusted friend or family and see if you can find out what is bugging you in the first place. a free and easy mind will give free and easy sleep.

sort your head out and the teeth will follow.

good luck

Im sure that's it...the stress.  My gf is driving me insane.  She keeps "forgetting" to get one of her cats fixed so for 2 weeks, we have to endure the freaking things 24/7 howling.

She was "supposed" to get rid of some pets before she moved in, but like so many other things in this relationship, she didnt find it convenient for herself.

So...grumble grumble...between the house being chaos 24/7 and me trying to sleep days, Im just *wicked* happy.

aww man, sad to say it but its definitely the stress and sounds like the g/f is to blame.
not sure what to suggest because i dont know you or your g/f or the situation youre in.

One thing i know for sure is that love/relationships are supposed to bring happiness and take away the stress, not add to it.

life is too short and pointless to get stressed out, you have to work out exactly what is causing your stress and stop it spoiling your night times once and for all.

maybe before you sleep:

-have a long bath and read a book

-spend some time to think about your stress and clear it from your mind before you sleep.

-make sure your bedroom doesnt have anything that reminds you of work, stress, cats, etc.  sounds silly but it really makes a difference.

-get stoned or have a little drink

-kick the cat outside and keep old shoes ready on window ledge. (optional)

most important!

- make sure you have had some 'Me Time' every day. if you have not done something that you want to do just for yourself each day, then there was no point in waking up at all. its your life, dont waste it on other people the whole time.

all this stuff helps me, i have had times of serious stress in my life.

all the stress is still in my life but i have found ways of not letting it bother me when i need to get some good sleep.

worrying about your stress will take years off your life and so will losing sleep, its just not worth it.

Good advice, Batfink

Once she got home and heard the noise that (colorful metaphor) cat was making, she immediately scheduled an appointment for it to get fixed tomorrow.  On top of that, she's planning to give away 3 of her pets she had been putting off (2 cats, 1 dog)  That'll cure a lot of hassle!

I grind my teeth at night and it's trouble.

It wears the teeth down and can even break them. I have a half prostethic in my upper front teeth that used to be glued in. I woke up biting that tooth off several nights untill they anchored it with two steel spikes. Which wasn't very pleasant btw..

They said I shouldn't have any feeling left in that half tooth when they started drilling their way in middle of the tooth.. well I did. :O And being a kid I didn't even complain about it untill it was finished (started panicing when they took 0.3 inch steel screws and janked them in the holes).

Asides the obvious tooth damage, you dont wake up with a sore jaw?

Im popping about 800mg of ibuprofen every 5 hours today.  My jaw isnt as sore as it was yesterday, it was sore to the touch...today its just still not back to normal.  (Seems to always be worse when you THINK about it!)

I've had this problem in the past. The "night guard" my dentist fitted fixed it right away, and its very unobtrusive - just a little doo-dad that snaps in place over my upper middle 2 teeth. The theory is that when you go to chomp down and something blocks your teeth from closing all the way, reflex takes over and relaxes the bite motion. My sore jaw went away immediately.

Yeah there are those devices that will stop you from grinding. AFAIK they also work but naturally are quite uncomfortable, sleeping with a chunk of plastic in the mouth..

I personally don't get sore jaws except for a couple rare occasions. My trouble is more with the teeth. Sometimes I still wake up at night when I chug my front teeth real hard together. So hard that I get scared I broke them off again.
