I am going to get a new dog.
« on: December 14, 2007, 01:08:02 AM »
I currently have a german shepard mixed with collie,  she is starting to get to where she can hardly walk very well.   I am looking at getting a small dog, I am hoping it will perk my current dog up and add at least a year to her life span.  I have had my current dog for 6-7 years now.  I have been looking at the mini daschund, mini schnauzer, possibly a welsh corgi, or a silky terrier.  I know that I will be getting one before Christmas ( hopefully)
Any reccomendations would be helpful.   :aok

Thanks,
Arian:aok

I have a german shepherd / collie mix too. She's so very awesome.
We're talking about getting a smaller dog after she's gone.  We're looking at the taco bell dogs.

Anything that's larger than a case of beer.
Otherwise it's only 1/2 a dog.

Arian,
Not to sound alarmist but has she been to the vet? Your comment about a middle aged dog having trouble walking got my attention, her being a Sheppard mix also makes me wonder. Another dog in the house may not be the solution.

As for the breeds mentioned, I'd go with the Corgi. Small dogs with large dog dispositions.

How about a 50-50 mix between an Icelandic shepheard and a Border collie ;)
Just got 3 last night. Wonderfully good tempered, playful and robust.
Not so big, just like a Border collie.
BTW, I have sent dogs to the USA ;)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

The perfect dog. :D

Lol Rip. The second picture looks like she's just taken the kid down and is hovering over her prey. ;)
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

If your dog has a medical problem causing difficulty walking, getting a new dog is not going to fix it. You would be better off addressing the problem by getting her examined by a veterinarian.

I wouldn't get another.  We put our Shepherd/Golden mix down this past year after he got cancer, couldn't control bowel movements, and could barely walk So it was a little late even then.  Almost 3 years ago we got a Shepherd puppy and it really ran the older one ragged, noticeable amount of aging when the new dog was introduced due to his energy and want to play all the time.

Best of luck to you though.

Yes I have taken her to the vet, there is nothing we can do for her :cry .
The vet has said that it was a degenerative thing in her hips.

Get a pug. They are good with kids, decent temperment, fairly intelligent and ugly as all get out on 4 legs.
