I ran AMD for every PC, think its time to try an intel chip out.

I am looking for a motherboard/cpu/memory combo, but I dont want something that isnt compatable with AH. Anyone here have any certain combo they recommend that works from personal experience?

Id like to keep it under $300. It doesnt have to be the top of the line but a lot better then what I have currently

AMD XP 2600 (real speed about 1.7 ghz)
512 DDR
MB - forgot the name, think its Asus something-or-the-other

AH is just a game that runs on an operating system. The motherboard and CPU are neither compatible nor incompatible with this game. They simply process the instructions sent to it via Windows.

That said, in the spirit of your post (if not the letter), any of the core 2 duo chips run AH with no problems. If you run Vista you may have some, but that's an entirely different kettle of tea.

So, if I were starting somebody off on a motherboard/CPU swap, and thinking you'd use all the other stuff, case/cards/drives/PSU, I'd suggest 2 things:

That's what I personally want, but by no means is it the only option.

Note you have to reinstall windows completely with a motherboard swap (you probably already know this)

It seems like I have seen a lot of posts with problems with dual core processors so I want to stay away from them.  I have a copy of my own OS so a blank HDD is no problem for me to do a fresh install.

Looking at about 2gb of ram also. Most of my hardware will come out of this desktop and put into the new one.  Right now I get frame rates of about 14 with most everything turned off. (DOH!)

 I think the problems you're speaking of concern the AMD dual cores, not the Intel Core 2 Duo's.

Meatwad... seriously... Core-Duo is THE WAY to go.

Even if you get the cheap one (E6300), you'll be VERY impressed.

I went from the same setup as you (Athlon XP processor, 512MB RAM) to a E6300 (1.7 GHZ, but dual core and new architecture) and 2GB DDR2... and the difference is absolutely ASTOUNDING!

I also went with a ASROCK DUAL-VSTA motherboard.. basically because the price is right and it has both AGP and PCI-E slots.  I'm glad I did.

I spent well under $300 and got:

Intel Core-Duo E6300 Processor
ASROCK Dual-VSTA Motherboard
2GB DDR2 ram
160GB SATA hard drive
COMBO DVD/CD-R drive (IDE)

I was able to reuse my GeForce 6200 AGP Video Card
XP Home
Case/Power Supply
Wireless PCI LAN card
KB/Mouse/Monitor


Since the price of the processors have gone down since then, you might even be able to budget an E6600.

Also this sucker runs VERY, VERY cool... a good 15-20 degree drop in temperatures, compared to my old AthlonXP.  Also I've heard you can overclock the heck out of these things, but I have yet to try (Nor do I need to).

Note:  The AMD dual core problems is due to poor Vista driver support.

XP problems have long been fixed, but running AH from Vista with an AMD dual core processor still requires running it in compatibility (single core) mode.

The problem with the DUAL-Vista mobo (I have the same one) is it tops out at 1066MHz FSB, and all the new conroes are coming out in 1333MHz FSB!

Hence why I suggested a different model ASRock. The link above supports 1333MHz.

I've got the DUAL-Vista, an E6420, 2GB DDR2 (previously 1GB DDR1) and a PCIe card. No problems with AH for me.

I don't see why not.

I'd throw away the power supply the second I opened the box up, but other than that, seems it's got all the basics.

Meatwad.. I run 512 texts at 1280X1024... sliders all about 3/4 to max.  Old GEforce 6200 256MB card (AGP).

I get 75FPS (Max resolution) at high altitutes with little action.

I get 50-60FPS at low altitudes with little action.

I get 30-40FPS at low altitudes in big furballs.

I do get an occasional drop to 15-20FPS if flying near flaming buildings during heavy action.. actually it seems the smoke affects frame rate more than anything.  Also heavy fog puts a big load on it, but it's rare I'm in that situation.

I'm hoping Santa brings me a better video card/power supply.  Actually Santa brought me a nice card on Black Friday, but Best Buy screwed up and resealed a junk card in the good card box.

The store manager accused my wife of trying to rip off the company and threw her out of the store, after she threw a fit because they wouldn't exchange it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with Best Buy customer service, and the best I could get was a check to refund the price + tax + shipping costs to send it back to them.

I'll just say I'll never visit Best Buy again.

I figure I'll get that check in.. say.. 6-8 weeks
