Altogether. Its just a hard plastic cap you slip over your two front uppers. It has a small protrusion to the rear that your lower teeth come into contact with just before the rest of your teeth touch each other. Clamp your teeth together, then open your mouth just a few millimeters. That's what the device does for you.

My dentist said its a reflex thing. Apparently the front teeth touching the guard before your jaw goes completely shut triggers a reflex to relax your jaw muscles from clamping down. All I know is the pain in my jaw went completely away after wearing the device a few days while I slept. After a month or two, I quit wearing it and haven't had any further trouble. Apparently it "trained" me to stop grinding my teeth.

Also, in reply to MrRipley, no the device isn't uncomfortable at all. Its really quite innocuous.

I do it.  It's definitely due to some sort of emotional state, most likely stress as pointing out.  I know that because I did it throughout high school, then stopped after that, then started grinding again during the two and a half years when I had a really crappy job, then stopped again when I quit.  And now since my hand surgury, I've started it up once more.

LePaul...its called TMJ...............i do it too from time to time...not allways .........

For me the first time i find out i been doing it when waking up thinking my GF(at the time)  Jacked im in the jaw that night................the lil cartalige disk that fits into the hing socket of my jaw will pop out and takes a few days to make its way back into place and stay.

The slip - night gaurds from the dentist are a rip off and total waste of your money.....seriously.......... ...i got one back in 1994 and it cost almost $400.

you can buy the dang mouth pieces and fit them your self.............if you can build an R2D2 you can fit your own slip guard!!!!!!!!

i think you can get the blanks at a pharmcy or try online............all it is, is a mouth piece(if you ever played football as a kid you had one) but a little harder material that you boil and fit then file/cut the ruff egdes till its comfy.

seriously save your self the money...........once you wear it and the grinding stops(the stress passes) you wont wear it till the next time youy need it...........during that time teeth can shift ever so  slightly in your mouth and it might not fit..............to the dentist that another $400 he gets to fit you for a new one!

I bought a mouthpiece/guard but I got the wrong size.  I am seeing the dentist monday tho, so I will have one soon.

One other thing i noticed...sometimes I wake up with my right ear feeling as though it was folded in half.  Hurts like hell for a few minutes after waking up.  Im guessing thats a TMJ thing too?

No chance.  I wish, though.  Say, I accidentally deleted all of my films when I uninstalled Aces High II after head-to-head shut down, and since then I've reinstalled it so that I can watch films.  Would you be so kind as to send me all of the films of our fights?  You have my e-mail address, right?

As for my hand, it's good and not good.  It's good in that I can do everyday tasks now without pain, but it's not good in that I can't use a gaming joystick without my hand hurting.  Ironically, I could use a real aircraft stick with no problem, as long as the stick forces weren't abnormally high (for instance, harsh maneuvers at high speed).

sure thing, i sadly only have a small collection, maybe only a pair of films from those days. one is a p51 vs p38 and the other might possibly be ki61 vs p38. maybe a couple of others if i look through and i will send them to you sometime over christmas. truly a shame that you wont be able to play, one of the most fun, creative and smooth flying fighters that i truly miss being able to fight.

What kind of mouthguard you need really depends on the type of teeth-grinding you are suffering from.

If you wake up with sore jaw muscles it usually isn't teeth grinding per se, but more of "teeth-pressing" and the soreness is caused by your muscles being flexed most of the night.
If you like MrRipley actually grind you get the typical symptom of chips breaking off, or maybe just "flatting" your teeth.

But it can also be a combination of the two, which is where you really can do damage and quick. Probably waking up your girlfriend as well.

Also pain from the ear often can easily be caused by the close proximity of the jaw joint, probably the disc slipping in and out of place.
To get a sense of the joint you can try to put your fingers in your ears while opening and closing your jaw and you can easily feel the mandibules movement.

As always it's best to deal with the cause and not the symptoms, but sometimes that's not possible.
