it comes with a proprietary battery and charger, but you will have to buy a memory card.

Circuit City.
But bought it online

They had it marked down from $799 to $699 as most stores are offering now.
BUT on the website they offered an additional deal that I got in on yesterday which seemed to be the last day.

Picked it up for $589.99 + tax ( final price was $630.96 after tax) and all I had to do was pick it up at the store.

Next question.

On the CF memory cards.

There seems to be a pretty wide price variation depending on brand on the same amount of memory

Example. on  2 MB cards I've seen prices as high as over $100
And as low as $40

Whats the difference. Does it really matter for the non professional casual user?

Any major brand - Sandisk, Kingston etc - would be perfectly safe and there's no reason to choose one over another.

Stay away from eBay , except when buying from a known reputable store. Many, many cards sold on eBay are fakes.

the price difference is probably due to the write speed of the card which should not matter to you.  Pros need a fast card because sometimes they shoot multiple frames of the same shot.

This is the Cannon I got and I really like it. I like the Sandisk memory cards. I tried another brand that someone reccomended and it went belly up in just a couple of months. It had a bunch of pics on it too. Sandisk sells some faster memory for a higher price but I've been using their 2 gig memory that costs something under or around $40. Been happy with it.

Good luck! It's a sweet camera.

The memory card should have a minimum of 20ns write time.
Toshiba make an excellent one. If you must go sandisk get a sandisk ultra.
