This sort of happened to me once against a JU88. It was skimming the waves and smoking badly. I emptied my entire ammmo load into it and it just continued to fly on unscathed. My theory is that the airplane had disco'd and it was a ghost image I was shooting at.

Spit did this happen in the last week or so? I was in a 88 on the water trailing a yak a spit and a LA7 all broke off at different times, I shot 2 down and had no gear 2 badly damaged engines and no belly gunner and 70 rounds left for my top gunners

But I wasnt trailing any smoke. Most of the hits registered were what seemed like 30 cal hits.
