ENY question
« on: December 27, 2007, 01:43:04 PM »
Ok, I've looked around on the help pages and everywhere else, but can't find the specific answer I need.

Why does an aircraft like the P-47N, which you almost never see, have a lower ENY than the P-51D?  These ENY numbers don't seem to correspond at all to how often an aircraft is flown.  What's the explanation?

P.S. I also tried to do a search in the forums but it wouldn't let me search for a three letter word!:lol

This is by far not going to be the best or most exact explaination. The most basic explaination is the lower the ENY the easier, better performance or most used planes in WWII. The higher the ENY means they were less used or where less in the performance department and are basically the earlier model planes in most cases. Like I said this is really not a perfect answer. Just the bare basic answer. I am sure someone will pop in here and elaborate on it more for you.

I believe the N was faster than the others.
In short, say your country is outnumbered by 30. Would you like to be fighting P-51D's and Niki's when you're outnumbered? Or would you rather be fighting FM2's, A6M's, and other higher ENY planes.

To answer your question more directly, there doesn't seem to be any particular "formula" from which the ENY values for a particular aircraft are calculated or derived, except that (obviously) GENERALLY! the more capable the aircraft the lower the assigned ENY value.

Again obviously, unless two aircraft are grossly mismatched, people can probably argue endlessly why the relative ENY between any two aircraft are "out of whack".   Take the two aircraft you mention - the 51D is generally a more dangerous fighter (in average hands) while the Jug can carry enough ordinance to take down most of a town all by itself.

Generally and by and large, the respective assignments seem to me to be generally "about right".

ENY corresponding to use would seem like the only logical and fair way to do it.  This has been argued and complained about many times, I'm sure...

What I seem to hear is that it's arbitrary and merely based on opinion.
