I don't think it's supersonic -- just close (as judged by shockwaves off the airframe).  I don't think those happen until the plane is going fast enough that air over parts of the airframe is supersonic (same cause as compressibility).

Yeah, its not supersonic.  All kinds of neat little things happen in the transonic regime though.

Coolest low passes I've ever seen was while working/living in the Highlands Scotland. Watching Tornados making runs through the valleys from a hill top was a great experience. Especially during average weather.

Once watched a Tornado scream over one ridge line, followed by a A10 who rolled over inverted at the top and dropped down, though that was very cool.

Took a Scotish girl on a date to the highlands for a picnic, she wondered why we had to ride (battered old GS550) so far instead of just going local. Didn't take long for her to get it..  :D

Ah, the cold war days..

Aqua shrimp you are wrong. The F-18 most certainly will do mach 1 (and better) under 10K. I have been in them at speeds over Mach 1 at very low altitude. It is a Mach 1.8 aircraft. The engines are plenty potent.

The reason you don't see aircraft go supersonic at airshows is because it is against regs and hazardous to the spectators.  A sonic boom is very loud (loud enough to shatter windows etc). I would hazard a guess and say most here have never heard a sonic boom.

Great pics and vids here btw.

cheers,

I've heard a sonic boom before. It was on 9/11 two planes took off out of Wright Pat I believe to escort Air Force One. Was one of the loudest things I have ever heard. Some of the neighbors car alarms went off up and down the street from the noise.

This isn't true.

Speed of sound is dependent of the current air pressure but is normally around 340m/s. Several sources list F/A-18's top speed at ground level as 361m/s.
