AHII Benchmarking
« on: January 01, 2008, 01:30:40 PM »
I just thought I'd start a thread so we can compare our AH performance to each other.  I think I do pretty well, considering my ancient video card.. maybe we can learn from each other how to get the most out of our systems.

MB/Processor:       E6300 Core-Duo/ASROCK Dual VSTA
Memory:                2GB DDR2
Video:                    Nvidia 6200 256MB AGP
HD:                        160GB SATA2

At 512 texts, 1280X1024 I get on average 30-40FPS, with detail sliders about halfway, maxing out at 75FPS when climbing up into the sky, dropping to 20-25 in heavy action.

Your vid card is holding you back.

I've got:

MB/Processor: E6420 Conroe/ASROCK Dual VSTA
Memory: 2GB DDR2
Video: eVGA Ge7600GTS 256MB PCIe
Sound: SB Audigy1 w/ Boston 2.1 digital spkrs
HD: 110GB SATA1.5

At 512 tex, 1280x1024 resolution (my LCD max) I get 50+ almost all the time. On the deck, with fires blazing, and dozens of cons, I might go down to the 30s or so, but I rarely stutter. I've got sliders out to max detail in-game, FSAA set to 2 or 4 (I can't remember) and my vid card set to "quality" instead of "performance."

What a difference a vid card makes
:O

Asus P5N-E SLI
E6400 @ 2.66ghz
4gb DDR2 667mhz
8800 GTS 640mb
2x250gb HD's in Raid 0
SB Audigy Platnium

I run 1600x1050 with 4xAA and 4xAF, 1024 textures, and I get a constant 60FPS.  If I turn Vsync off, low detail areas I'll see 200+.  But the majority is 110-180FPS, depending on the fights.

But as Krusty said, that 6200 AGP card is by far the weakest link in your computer.  A mid range 7xxx series card will get you 60 FPS easy, and you wouldn't have to buy a new power supply (maybe :p )

When benchmarking AH it is very important to pick a particular terrain, a particular location, a particular view, and even a particular zoom level.  The fps can vary wildly with those parameters (at least for those of us not blessed with high speed computers that max out the fps all the time).  My examples:

Mmesa terrain at A1, Shift F1, details max/max, offline, 4xAA/8xAF, 1280x1024, 512 textures.

T34 in hanger, gunsight view zoomed max*: 9600XT = 42, 7600GT = 80

T34 driver view, head out the window, unzoomed: 9600XT = 29, 7600GT = 28 (more trees to render so CPU bogs down)

T34 driver view, head out, zoomed max: 9600XT = 53, 7600GT = 58  (somewhat fewer trees, CPU speeds up)

Doing the same with SHIFT F4 gives more trees and lower fps: 35/73, 23/21, 46/48.

Note that under many view conditions I am limited not by my graphics card, but by my CPU (P4 Northwood 2.8GHz w 1.5GB RAM), and it was a mistake to upgrade my graphics card (but then it was only $100).

*this used to bring AH to it's knees until HTC made a significant improvement in the rendering algorithm, that's why I include it.

Oh I know all about my video card.

I actually just ordered a 7900GS... and a 600W power supply to go with it.

Along with a new X52 (old X45 giving me some problems lately, and I never could really get used to the stiffness of it), a powered USB2 hub, and a wireless mouse with a dock for recharging (tired of dumping batteries into this dang thing!)

Can't wait to be able to crank up the detail!

I ran a similar card to yours Tigger and capped it at 60 fps, It hardly ever varied. Check to see what processes you have running in the background.

In fact it was like a 5700 I think.

Oh.. I can get 60FPS consistently.. if I run 256texts and a lower resolution.. and crank the detail down even further.  I simply don't want to do that.

I also play FSX, and this 6200 definitely doesn't cut it for that!

As far as processes... well I'm no rookie to configuring XP.  I have a separate user account for AH and FSX, and also use FSAutostart to get down to.. if I remember right 18 processes (maybe less).

Back when I got the 6200, it was an upgrade from the 5200, but money was tight at the time and the deal with right.. I just knew it was a "temporary" upgrade though.

Now that we're through the rough times financially (steady, decent job... wife is about to start working again... getting a serious tax return next month... plus I found a good source for a decent second income.. yes it's legal), and being that I almost NEVER buy anything for myself, I feel that I'm deserving of blowing a little cash!

So I just ordered this:

-X52 Setup.. I love the X45 but never could get used to the stiffness
-XFX 7900GS PCIe
-600W Power supply (not a cheap-o)
-Powered USB2 Hub
-Rechargeable wireless Mouse

I figured this should compliment the Saitek rudder pedals the Wife got me for Christmas quite nicely!

I've never been a big ATI fan, and although it's been years I'm still not sold.  Also I don't care about DX10 or Vista, so I don't see much point on spending money on a 8000 series Nvidia, especially when really the only gaming I do is FSX and AH!  I really wanted a 7950GT, but it's a huge price leap... so I have to feel good about SOMETHING I bought!

Intel Pentium 4 Northwood core at standard clock of 3.06GHz
4x512MB Corsair ValueRAM at PC3200 (Standard DDR)
XFX nVidia 6800 (Pipelines unlocked to 6800GT)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
200GB SATA 3.0 Gb/s Hard Drive at 7200 RPM
Saitek X52

Run full sliders with everything preloaded and hi-res textures (yes, I manually downloaded them) with an average frame rate not below 45.

Just did some offline with my new 7900GS..

Maxed the sliders... upped to 1024 textures (hi-res textures)

1280X1024

Couldn't get into any situation where FR dropped below 40!

Now to online play!

A radeon 3850 would have been a much better option. The GS series are all horrible price/performance.

Can't recall who said it BUT!

Find the place in your vid card settings and turn on triple buffering!
