Man using GPS drives in front of train

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. - A Global Positioning System can tell a driver a lot of things — but apparently not when a train is coming. A computer consultant driving a rental car drove onto train tracks Wednesday using the instructions his GPS unit gave him. A train was barreling toward him, but he escaped in time and no one was injured.

The driver had turned right, as the system advised, and the car somehow got stuck on the tracks at the crossing. He jumped out and tried to warn the engineer by waving. He got out of the way just before the train slammed into the car at 60 mph, Metro-North railroad spokesman Dan Brucker said Thursday.

The car was pushed more than 100 feet during the fiery crash.

Some 500 train passengers were stranded for more than two hours during the Wednesday evening rush hour. The accident also heavily damaged 250 feet of rail, Brucker said.

Clearly it must be the electronic devices fault or the rental companies. The fault could never lie with the driver.....

Do they project the road maps onto the windshield now, thus preventing the driver from seeing any actual road?

Funny... last time i was in my car with my TomTom running, I was the one driving, not the TomTom... am I doing something wrong?

If you NEED a GPS unit to drive on surface streets, you should just do the world a favor and stay home.

One of my coworkers is a "gadget king". He has a TomTom and was showing it off.

He drive 1.3 miles to work and seldom travels. wtf?

In the OLD days we had a thing called a MAP and we used it before, during and sometimes after we drove.

Yep!

For example, some gomer is driving down the highway. He needs to go to "Hoffman" and the sign along the highway says to turn right. However, the GPS doo-dad says to turn left. You cant turn left because there is no left. Only straight and a right turn.

Since gomer always relied on his gps, he is now officially lost and cannot navigate using DOT issued signs, markers, or other means of using common sense.

Seriously, if someone doesnt have enough common sense to read signs, read a map, or use basic common sense, they have no business behind a wheel.

What? My GPS died. I dont know how to read street signs. WAAAAAA im lost

Ancient scrolls have been partially translated. These things called mapquest were supposedly used somehow back in the day. Scientists cannot figure out how to turn these documents on and ask them how they worked.

I have an iPAQ that has TomTom loaded on it. I mostly use it for spits and giggles. While driving on a little Farm to Market road I know well it suddenly said "turn right". WTF, I'm on a straightaway? Then it said "turn left" followed by "turn left" and another "turn right".

I guess it wanted me to drive thru a couple of lawns then get back on the road.
