2nd Hard drive boot up?
« on: January 03, 2008, 07:27:47 PM »
I just installed a second hard drive with a fresh installation of windows xp. I want to be able to select which hard drive / operating system to boot when starting the computer.

The problem is my bios does not recognize the new drive as a boot device. The bios does recognize that the new drive is installed, but it cannot be selected on the Select Boot Device Priority screen. I think since the drive is not showing up there, it is not showing up in the F10 - Boot Drive Selector (if that is correct...). The original hard drive and the dvd-rom drive are the only devices showing up in that F10 - Boot Screen.

The new drive is an ATA drive, set as the master on the same cable as a dvd-rom drive set as the slave.

My original drive is SATA

Motherboard: Intel D875PBZ

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

I would try booting up with only those two drives connected.. both on the same IDE cable on either IDE channels, and on separate channels - i.e. all the positions you've got the patience for (4 possible permutations).

Moot cant do that 1 is a SATA drive (Diff typ of cable) than the Reg ATA cable. I did try unhooking the DVD-Rom. But in Bios still shows only 1 as being able to boot up and cant change it. Need to find way for it to be able to put in the boot sequence. But the New HD is not showing there.:cry

I don't know then... Unless I see the BIOS menus, I can't say if there's something in there that could help or not.

Did you try booting with only the one new drive plugged in?

Yes.. It Boots up No problem when its by its self. Its does not show as a Boot device when both are pluged in. I thinking it has to do with 2 diff HD 1 being SATA and other ATA.

Hmmm this sounds like a bios problem... at first blush. Have you checked for a bios update?  I have a similar HD set up w/ XP and have no troubles.

yes there is a Bios update. But my son keeps telling me not to F with it, that updating can cause more problems like he had.. I dont have the original Bios disc and not sure on how to to save them. I think Im going to have to bring it to the Geek and have him fix it up..

A bios update isn't like a software update, and it is easy to fry your hardware if done the wrong way...  Give Skuzzy a call to figure out what's really going on.  Shots in the dark can only take you so far.
