Need help with computer/internet access

Need help with DSL modem, two computers and a router.

I have two computers (my new on and old faithful).

If I directly connect either computer to the DSL modem, they can access the internet as expected.

If I plug both of them into the router and the router into the modem, The can see each other and the router, but cannot see the internet or the modem.

I have messed around with a few router settings, but no joy.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Router: Linksys BEFSR41 v4
DSL Modem: Westell model E90-610030-06
ISP: Bellsouth (Extreme 6.0 Fast Access)

They both on the same workgroup? No problems on that end?

If so I'd try a different hub/switch/router.

You may need to setup your router to mimic one of your PC's MAC addresses.

Some ISPs only allow one "computer" to be hooked up cause they want you to  pay them for additional computers... Your router has a MAC address clone.. try typing in the MAC address of one of your PCs and then enabling it.

If your modem is not a pure modem but a built in router (NAT for example) you have to disable the built in router to make the external work. This can be done in the modem administration by switching the operation mode to 'bridged' instead of routed. You can check this easily by connecting your computer straight to your modem and start cmd and ipconfig. If your IP address is 192.168.x.x then your modem is actually doing a NAT translation and you need to disable it.

I have the befsr41/ Edit: I have the befsx41 which also has 50 VPN slots but otherwise its pretty much same /Edit also and use it exactly in the configuration you described. The only difference is that my modem is a wireless and 4 port router combination.
 
Make sure your router is set to 'obtain ip address automatically' and 'dhcp server enabled'. If first one is not on, your router can't get connected in default mode. If latter is not on, your computers can't get IP addresses automatically from the router and assuming NAT is on.

Also if you plug the machines to your router and you have default settings enabled (which means NAT is on) make sure your computers have 'get ip address automatically / dhcp' enabled in the tcp/ip settings.

MrRiplEy[H]: You rock!  I set the modem to bridged and turned off the DHCP controller and that worked.  I would buy you a drink if I was there (and I drank) :D
