Anyone still play Silent Hunter III?
« on: January 05, 2008, 11:19:52 AM »
I have a question.

When I'm making an attack run and pull up the target ID book sometimes I get target boxes on the ship picture in the book.  Most of the time I get them, sometimes I do not.  I make sure there is a Weaps Officer at his station but am at a loss to figure out why is it that sometimes I get these target boxes and other times I don't.

Oustanding game, btw, my old POS rig has just enough muscle to play it.

If your torpedo solution is close to a strait angle on the ship's beam and you are very close you get the option to target critical locations on the ship. Do you run the Grey Wolves mod?

So the "target boxes" only appear if my solution is at or near a perfect right angle?

No, I haven't done the GW mod...yet.

That's right, and there is a max range limit too, but I am uncertain what it is. Check the wikipedia article on SH3 to get the list of "must have" mods. The improvements are immense, but if your puter just manages to run SH3 stock performance may suffer.

OK, thanks.  Yeah, I've been nursing this rig for a couple of years now.  I bought SHIII for $20 as a digital download last September and I haven't been this addicted to a game in a long, long time.  Probably since Fighting Steel came out in '98/'99.

When I get a new PC I'll do the GW mod and get SHIV.

Attacking convoys is so much fun!

I play with only one game mod. Plus a couple sound mods.

Real U-boat

I then play campaigns using SH3 Commander. Still entertaining after all a couple years. I'm in the same boat with you though, Old Rig barely runs it so most of the games I play are usually a couple of years old all modded up :)

P4 1.8, 1 Gig of Ram, ATI 9200 Video Card. (pathetic isn't it)
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I still want to pick that one up when I see it in the bargain bin. Unfortunately I grabbed World in Conflict and COD4: MW before Christmas and have been playing them both quite a bit.

Just got SH4 - not really had a chance to get in to it yet.

I was a big, big fan of the Silent Service series way back when.

SH4 is good.  Same gameplay really as SH3.  I haven't played it in months, bought it when it first came out.  The graphics are great (turned up high).
Some of the campaign missions seem to get old as you doing the exact same thing over and over some times.

Some of the things they've haven't fixed (and bugs me).  1)  Airplanes amazing can turn almost on a dime.  2)  AI on ships.  I can seem to get ships to ram into each other during a depth charge attack.  They just keep circling and circling and sometimes destroyer run into each other.

Just a reminder - SHIII contains the starforce rootkit-like copy protection that replaces your system files and can render your dvd-burner dead.

I did the digital download.  It's Starforce free.  My DVD burner has been working fine.

There is a way to install it without starforce....
