How many here name their Cars or Guns?
« on: January 07, 2008, 05:40:57 PM »
Having always been a car and Gun guy, I have been around others for years.

There is a portion of both communities that give their cars girl names.  It has always seemed odd to me.

On cars I was always uncomfortable with it, and I always just called my GTO the goat. But never a chick name. I just call the Jeep, the Jeep.

Guns seems even odder to me.

I was always told by my father a gun was just another tool. You treat it with the respect it deserves as a dangerous tool, but it was still just that. Giving them female names just seems odd.

It also gets you an immediate funny looks from non gun types.  I never want to give a bad impression to a non gun type that has not made their mind up yet, because if you come off like a nut, ( as far to many of us do) that will immediately sway the person to the anti gun side if that’s all they have seen. If you come off more normal you will more likely get the person to keep an open mind and try it out, I have never had a person I took shooting not like it.

I have had people back out from shooting because they felt really uncomfortable around one of the others shooters.

So why do or don’t you name these items?

I've heard in New Zealand, "Goat" IS a girl's name.

:noid

As for your question, no, I've never named my cars either.

My .45 is Pearl.

I got the name from The Beverly Hillbillies when Granny was hurt and wanted put out of her misery she turned to Jethro's mother and said "Sing to me Pearl!"

I have heard that as well.

I was pretty into the goat, but I never thought of it that way.

I name my boats.  However, I always refer to cars and guns as "Her".

I talk to my Jeep, but it doesn't really have a name.  I do use female pronouns for her, though.

I use female pronouns for guns, too, but I don't talk to them or name them.

We (my father and I) call the old beatup pickup we use on the mountain for hauling wood "Bertha".  The little Ford Explorer we bought last summer as another beater is "Betty" (2 of the 3 Butt Sisters).  My .270 is "my girl" and my 12 guage is "the blunderbust".  I had a Jeep Commanche that has sinced died that I used to call "The Grey Ghost" (it was faded silver in color).  I guess I kinda name stuff :)

I've called my cars' all kinds of things. But when I was trying to restab the Trans in my old mustang after changing a clutch, I remember simply calling it "Sonovu*****!" :lol

I'm not into naming vehicles and guns either with the one exception of boats. Boats are always named, they historically have always been named, and that seems normal to me.

I found it strange when an aquaintance of mine asked me about my scooter and was I having fun with "her". I told him I didn't make love to machines but that I did enjoy riding "it" quite a bit. My wife, however, refers to the scooter as " a outra" which means "the other one" refering to the scooter as a female rival.

I find it a bit strange to name inanimate objects with the above exception, boats.

Naming boats seems to be standard practice, and I've heard it's bad luck if you don't do so.  Guns and cars I've never named.

I will name a car when it's earned it.  My '68 Cougar goes by the name Christine.  Not because she runs around trying to kill people, but because she runs around trying to kill ME.

I named my truck “Black Bear” ten years ago, it’s since been shortened to “Bear”… I’ve also named 2 of my guns. A .50cal Hatfield flintlock rifle I named “Moses” after Hoses Hatfield. And an 1864 Springfield .58cal musket I named “Jebediah” but it is usually just referred to as “Jeb”.
My password at work had to contain exactly 8 characters… I chose Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

My GTO is named Katie. After I girl I knew in college. There is a story behind the name, I just don't feel like sharing it.
