Or the non-German people typing German words. :)

Maybe alt-o, alt-a, alt-u and alt-s?
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

There are other problems, though. The non-German players cannot request to join those players as a gunner, or to report them for vox/chat abuse, or to invite them to squadrons, or to squelch them in the radio bar, or to do many different text commands.

I have seen it in many other games, where they allow special characters. They bring up more trouble than they're worth, IMO.

My vote is to just use standard characters. You'll notice no spanish "n" or cyrillic "ae" either.

Unless they go to the roster and right click on the offending party's name.  Then they can do all that.

I understood he is talking about text radios... not player names.

Scandinavians also suffer from typing without ä, ö and even å.
It is pretty much like if you guys should use k, v and t to substitute c, w and d :)

Yeah, but I'll give you $20 if you can do it in the text buffer in the game. :p

I will play devils advocate (with the standard disclaimer):

English is the international language of Air traffic control. If I remember my history, it was agreed to by an international convention after WW2.

In Der Gross Schlag I was assigned to a group of 190s that were texting back and forth in Finnish... as I speak English, German and Korean but not Finnish, I was lost and ended up flying with a different 190 Staffel.

Recently I was up in the middle of the night (Pacific time) and was supporting 5 or 6 guys trying to take a base, all texting and speaking Spanish. Again I was lost dispite my schoolboy Spanish.

The greatest number of players are from English speaking areas and most players from the EU can at least read English... It would be kaos if there were 8 or 9 languages flying around on country/200.

This view in no way is meant to detract from the languages/cultures of my German/French/Swedish/Spanish/Russian/Farsi/Portugese/Finnish/Polish/Uzbek/Arabic/Italian/Inuit/Mongolian/Sanskrit/Latin/Chinese/Swiss or Canadian AH2 flying brethern (Yes, there are a couple of "ringers" in that list)

:aok :lol  :rofl :huh :cry :O :noid

The issue here is not about public channels. It is about the possible usable characters for private and squadron text channels. The public spoken and typed language has and would remain English.

I bet all foreigners (by anglo-american standards) type their mother tongue to each other even now. The wish is just about them being able to type in game like thay can on this board at their private areas.

Is it too difficult to figure out that o, a, u and ss could represent the above?

How about every other nationality requiring language symbols?  I am sure the Japanese guys would love it...
