Boston III Skin (First skin)
« on: January 13, 2008, 11:40:21 PM »
The skin made is of:
Cpt. Kegelman AL750 Z (USAAF)

I made this skin 1 year ago, but never submitted it.
I'm hoping everyone here can let me know if there are mistakes that I should correct before submitting it.  Here are a few screenshots:

I would like to thank Guppy, Nomde, Greebo and Krusty for all their help that they gave to me last year.  My computer had died, I was in the process of map making when in the summer I gave up due to too much frustration that the AH design programs were giving me.  I may pick up on the project again if H2H opens again and a map maker with some free time :)
I've made another skin last year, but it will never be accepted as it's a 190a3 skin.  I'm sure you know which one guppy.  He shot down the British Pilot Henning flying that Boston near Bergan Airfield.  I'll post some pictures on that later in this thread.  That skin was 99% done.  I think I was missing the german labels throughout the plane.

Looks very nice.

A little too nice, actually. Could use a tiny bit of dirtyin' up a bit.

Nothing rediculous, just a little bit here and there.

That 190 A3 might get in as an A5? Post some screens, it might be worth a shot.

We have a few A4s in as A5s.

Sometime this week, I'll lighten up the roundels by desaturating the colors abit.

Hmmm, maybe I'll try desaturating all the colors abit to make it appear more weathered.

I'll post updates this week.

190a3 skin, I'll post as well.  Now that I think about it, I may have not added the weathering, along with the missing german labels.

Edit:  Thanks for the constructive criticism all.

I added a small effect to the green paint wearing away.
Added a small effect of more "dirty" to the over paint.
I desaturated the colors of the roundels, which made them a little darker, but made the white, not so perfectly white, which was a good thing.

If you think its too shiny, play around with the values in the material.txt file, or export the default skin from another painted aircraft and try using the material.txt from that skin.

Just darkening the color won't change its reflectivity.

Looks great but you might find some specularity values that tone down the shininess.

That skin has turned out very nice Kermit. The Boston is an old skin so material files won't work on it, you are stuck with whatever light effects HTC applied to it.

The Boston (and the A-20G) is, as Rogerdee said, a pig to skin. There are half a dozen little patches on each wing which are applied over the nacelles in various spots. Getting them all to line up with the shading and camo is really difficult. OTOH this skin is spread over no less than three 1024 tiles, so you can get a finer level of detail than on any other plane.

Thanks for the info about the material Greebo.  My weathering doesn't look as good as yours, even though I'm happy with what I've accomplished, I hope to have skills someday.

Yes it was a "pig" to skin, due to all the little glitches in it, but using macros really took seconds to see the updates on the skin, which saved me lots of time.  I'd make a change to the skin, hit a button, then alt-tab to the skin viewer and see the change in just seconds.

I'd like to submit this skin as:
15th BS USAAF

I know it has RAF 226 Squadron Markings, but feel as though it was remembered by the raid in which it took part in, flown by an awarded US Pilot, who unfortunately died at the end of the war, in a flying accident instead of this famous July 4 raid.  Besides, if someone questions it, it will only spark curiousity and thus hopefully lead to some education.
